It's a buckeye, Aesculus. Perhaps it is Aesculus pavia. I find them to be desirable. What is your location ? Hummingbirds like them.

I am in SW PA. I don't remember seeing another of the same tree on the lot so I am not sure how a buckeye ended up there. Should I attempt to relocate it? It's right next to a big Virburnum.

There is a horse chestnut tree on my property, Aesculus hippocastanum. It produces masses of seeds (buckeyes or conkers) that squirrels find irresistible and thoughtfully plant all over my and neighboring yards. They germinate and grow rapidly so every spring there is another crop to cull. This gets to be a BIG tree - 4 to 5 times that of A. pavia - so leaving yours in place may not be a very good idea.

The point is the mother tree may not necessarily be that close to your property and so you really have no idea how big it could get until fully identified.

It has a flower bud. Will the color of the flower help determine the type?

you would move it in dormancy ... either in fall or next spring... 6 to 8 weeks before leaf out.. which you can presume is right about now ... so.. around march first ...

its putting out all those leaves on stored energy... which was sot

stored in the roots..

if you go out there now.. and cut off 95% of its roots .. while its still leafing out.. odds are it will die ... and you dont want to do it when the heat of summer starts building.. so you are back to fall or winter.. or early spring...
