Help picking white/off white paint for exterior stucco

last modified: 3 years ago

Really looking for input on a shade of white/off white for stucco repaint. I had my choices down to 2 (SW Alabaster or Sw White Duck). After putting the 2 samples on an exterior wall...the Alabaster was too bright and the Duck White looks dingy. I need something in the middle. The house gets alot of sun in the summer and I don't want it to be blinding. Maybe a lower LRV but still a non-dingy off white. If anyone has any ideas please let me know - the painter is ready to start.

Putting the two colors next to each other changes your perception of them. I agree that Alabaster is too white, but Duck White looks good to me.

Here are some options. Would Natural Choice be too dark?

Thanks for your input. Thinking perhaps I should stick with white duck. Maybe it will look lighter on a bigger surface. I think pearly white is one shade lighter but has more green undertone.

Hard to say without seeing the entire house. I do like the White Duck. Always interesting how much colors lighten up on the exterior. You’d never know that was Alabaster.

Just curious what you decided on? And would love to see how it turned out. We are currently picking a white for ours. Thanks

I've sampled quite a few on my stucco. Looking for creamy off white, I love the modern off white homes with dark trim and windows but can't nail down the color they use. I also don't want bright white and Alabaster is also too white for me. Got it down to Creamy, White Duck and Shoji White, but still none of them look like the modern paint color everyone is using, which may be White Dove or Simply White which is great on farmhouse modern, but mine is not farmhouse style plus I have a ton of large trees, it sits in the sun all day, so I may go out and get more samples..I've spent a fortune on those things.

We just had our stucco done. It is SW Creamy. We chose it to coordinate with the natural limestone which is behind the scafolding. It is a very pretty creamy white. We actually would have preferred it to be a brighter white. The windows are black and we will be adding black gutters and soffits. Once the landscaping is in we believe it will take away the reflection of the orange clay surrounding the house, we hope.

I know that this is an old post, but can you tell me what direction your home faces? I have a north facing house that doesn't get alot of light which is good, because I am thinking of going with creamy, and I am hoping to avoid yellow undertones. Do you notice those? Can you please post more pics?! Thanks!

Susan, what did you go with? We are in the same dilemma.

Last year - ok, hopefully she figured out. But fwiw, those samples are way, way too small - should paint one or more 4 x 8 panels that can be moved around and looked at on different sides of the house, under different lighting conditions. Colors will look different on large scale, and in context of other colors (e.g. other houses, trees, etc.

I am sure this posting is coming too late for the request of more pics but hopefully it'll be helpful to someone as I found older posts with pics to be very helpful.

The top pic is the eastern exposure and bottom pic is west (no pics with sun directly on west)

The landscaping helps tone done the orange clay reflection, but it is definitely a creamy warmer white (SW Creamy). It works really well with the limestone.

I ended up choosing SW Pearly White. it is a creamy white in the sun and a very light greige on cloudy winter days. I am looking for photos (it is our summer house) I will post as soon as I find a photo from last summer. Seapearl was recommanded to me by 2 paint store when I was looking.

Our entire interior was painted BM Swiss Coffee at 50% (making it a bit lighter). It is a really nice creamy white without too much yellow due to only 50% tinted.

Susan, I would love to see a picture of the final result as I’m also wondering if I should have gone with pearly white. I went with shoji white for my stucco house and to me it looks a little dingy

Leah...I will be there tomorrow. I will get photos in the sun and when the sun goes down. I will post here this weekend.

Leah. Can you post a picture of your shoji white? We will be doing all stucco exterior with black window trim and would love to see both yours and Susan results. Thanks.

This is the Pearly White. It was overcast the entire weekend so this is the colour without alot of sun. The house looks very plain without any flowers, planters. We are still updating the exterior. We need a new front door and some other contrast. The stucco looks brighter in the sun. It is a very neutral shade of off white.

Susan, what color did you paint your garage doors, and what direction does your house face? I was considering Alabaster as our exterior color also, but we face west, and I think it's going to be too white for the look I want. I want that creamy, soft white. Attached is a picture of our current paint that my husband selected when he built the home, the second pic is a better representation of how yellow it can look. I'm going for more of a Mediterranean style, neutral look without such contrasting colors. The current color scheme is:

    Body: Downing Sand SW 2822

    Pop-Outs/Trim: Renwick Olive SW 2815

    Accent: Polished Mahogany SW 2838

I painted all exterior doors Anew Gray but I find in certain natural light it can look a bit purple. I would avoid taupe shades outside as the undertones can be tricky.

I think SW Alabaster (not BM alabaster) or BM White Dove with doors in something like Dorian Gray / Wordly Gray would be nice.
