May I suggest a chandelier over the table. A lamp might just not be enough, depending on how much lighting you want in the room. It might also give it a more formal look.

Is it expensive/complicated to put a light above the table? We'll be doing renovations in a year, so I'm hesitant to do something major/expensive.

It looks like there is a ceiling light in the area across from where you put your table. Doesn't look like that bad of a light either.

This will cost you zero: move your table under that existing light.

The table did not work in that space. It's much better where it is.

i think you can can have cord light kit chandelier or light fixture . it is easy and inexpensive .

You can always purchase a swag chandelier, look it up, you can plug it into an outlet, and install a swag hook where you need the chandelier or pendant or whatever to drop down..

I don't know about the swag idea...... hummmmm just seems to break up the line of sight for me, at least. I like lights suggested by indianpatty. Pulling electric can be expensive.

Yes, you would need two hooks, one in the ceiling at the wall where the outlet is and the cord then goes down to that outlet and a second hook in the ceiling centered over the table.

You can also use plastic covers (that you paint over the ceiling and wall color) and not have the classic chain.

You could consider and arc lamp with a DRUM SHADE.
You could place the base right next to the floor vent in the corner
That you you could avoid messy wires and swagged lighting

or if you really want to swag :)

I really think you should reconsider putting the table in the other area with the chandelier. Looks like there is plenty of room for it and I think the flow of the area would be better.
