What's wrong with these rhododendrons?

I planted these rhododendron Chionoides (a white hybrid) about five years ago. They have grown but never thrived, and I wonder if the problem is the location or some disease. They are leggy and the leaves are pale, just basically unattractive. They are under trees but do face south so too much sun may be the problem? What should I do with them if I transplant so I don't carry a problem to the new area? I am in New York zone 6b and my soil is very acidic. Thank you for your advice.
