Installing post mounted mailbox on existing post

I had a guy back into my mailbox today. luckily it didnt snap or get knocked over bit it did shift some. i have a standard wood mounted mailbox but thought about taking a sawzall and just cutting the post down shorter and sliding a new mail box over it. the post in the ground now is 3.5”X3.5”. figured i could just cut off the top portion on the post and slide a new one on. any issues with that?
