DIY Landscaping help!

I’m trying to get inspiration for landscaping my front yard. If any one has any ideas or tips, could you help me out? Thanks! ☺️

Cute home! Are you planning to leave the hedges across the front or remove them? Do you want to incorporate areas for sitting, relaxing, chatting with neighbors?

I’m Keeping the hedges and there’s a small covered patio/porch that’s used for sitting, and I’m located in Dallas.

It looks like the concrete walkway is the only hardscape. I had a similarly laid out front yard and we removed our large lawn and existing single width concrete sidewalk, replacing it with a wider, slightly curved walkway that leads from the house through the yard, splitting to provide access to both the driveway and the sidewalk. That sort of divided the space into natural zones. One zone became a DG patio and four areas because planting beds.

Are you thinking you’d like to add hardscape to the space or keep the single straight walkway? Have you seen yards that you really liked? What did you like about them?

Do you enjoy spending time sprucing, trimming, watering, or would you rather have low maintenance landscape?

I would bring the garden out and curve it to soften the edges. You need to take out some of the hedges so it’s not a straight line. I would also have a small area on either side of the door for some color. Vinca do well in the Dallas heat. I think I would add some nandina, another heat loving plant, for different textures.

Well, my starting advice is to remove the hedges.

I see you like the hedges, but consider removing about 3’ of them next to the front steps, both sides. They’re making a fortress-like statement (along with your ADT sign 😁) but removing a bit will open up your front entry. Someone has been doing a good job keeping them low enough under the windows.

I agree with Little Bug on removing a portion of the hedges around the steps so you can pretty up the entry. On my computer screen it looks like the hedges extend beyond the width of the house. If so, I'd remove the excess there as well. Then we need to add a flower bed in front of the hedges with flowering plants and softer foliage (daylilies, salvia, liriope, etc - a Texan will chime in with useful suggestions for you).
