There is an indentation in the top of the bulb that even in very well drained soils will collect and hold moisture causing the bulb to rot. Fritiallaria imperialis bulbs should be planted sideways or at an angle to prevent that.

Yes, definitely Frits. What Gardengal said - I don’t always do a full sideways tilt, but do generally give a bit of a tilt. I also find they consistently do better in my more woodland backyard than my sunnier front. All the singles I planted last year came up as doubles this season!
