I transplanted a peony about this time of year. I gave it plenty of water and it was fine. You might need to makeshift some shade for it at first if it’s really hot or in full sun.

The irises will be fine, just cut off the blooming stalk for cut flowers, before replanting to encourage good root growth. One year, I was thinning out some iris for my mother in law, and she didn‘t replant all of them, and just put them up against a tree. They rooted and bloomed the next spring! Irises are really tough.

are there better times to do this.. sure .... but so what ...

if done properly... with proper after care.. you should be all set ... they just arent going to perform this season the way you would expect ...

i might pot them in good media.. for supreme aftercare during the heat of summer.. and properly plant them in fall ....

and i would site them in shade ... just to reduce shock.. and i could move them in fall ...

i would remove all flowers at transplanting... just to reduce water demands on a new transplant ...

I transplanted some peonies and irises in mid-July from my grandparents house that was being sold. They survived just fine. As others have said, cut off this year’s blooms and don’t expect any next year. Keep them watered and rig temporary shade. Be sure to read up on proper planting depth for those two particular plants because neither is planted like most perennials. They like shallow planting.

Old peonies have quite a large root mass. You may need a cart or an assistant or both for this job.
