My studio needs some serious help

Hi Everyone,
I live in a tiny (seriously 250sq ft) studio apartment). I am still trying to figure out how to place my mismatched furniture. Any suggestions are appreciated! I am thinking about moving the bed out of the corner and placing bedside tables on each side instead of just one. Also, moved the couch into that corner and doing something else with the corner shelves.

Don't you bump your head when you stand up from the love seat?

If you want more help, we really need to see all the walls of the space. More pictures, please.

Move your bed under that window, especially since you do not have a head board. It will FEEL more spacious that way and there will be room for a table on each side then, too. If there are two windows there, I am talking about the one we fully see in the pics.

Bring the couch out from where it is and float it in the room.......that will also feel better without the ceiling right there. Have the back be toward that opening and I am guessing it will not be facing the bed? Keep the coffee table with it and put a side table with it, too. Put the book shelves and the corner shelves under that overhand as they fit and will still be accessible.

This looks like a fun place to live. Enjoy it!

Looks like the coffee table and the bedside table may be a pair. Are they the same size and would you have a problem painting them?
Thanks for the replies! I haven't bumped my head, but I am only 5'2", so that is probably why. I would like to put the bed under the windows, but then there wouldn't really be room for the couch to "float" in the room. Although I have wondered about that. The coffee table and bedside table are a set, I just moved them and the bed to play around. I have to stand in the "kitchen/entryway" to attempt a picture of the whole room :)

Boy! I was mixed up in here! OK.........thanks for the new pics! Soooooo what if the bed went in front of the one window with a table on each side and then the small couch in front of the other window and a table and lamp were shared?

You have big things under a low ceiling and small things out in the open....those shelves under the window now. Try those where the couch is as they are the right size for there and move the couch out to that window. GOSH! I hope they all fit!!! Then maybe you can have a little table and two chairs in the open floor space to eat on/study???

there is a lot of brown and wood color in all your furniture, even the carpet is brown! I would say sand and paint some of the pieces or if that is too much work maybe try contact paper? Although with contact paper your color choices are far more limited. How about new bedding with some color on it?

Oops, that posted before I was ready. I am going to try putting the bed and couch under the windows now, I think that will open it up. Good suggestions! I am planning on painting the bedside tab
  • 13 years ago
Wow this is being difficult from my phone! The bedside tables will be painted white When I get around to it. I have a new duvet cover coming in the mail it's blue-and-white.
Maybe even try those pillows from the bed....two in front......ON the couch to tie the two pieces together???

Blue and white bed and white tables? THAT will change this room a bunch! AGAIN....do not forget some pillows for that couch. All your wooden pieces are the same color now and that is a good thing for you, too.

Ask if you can paint the walls / ceiling that are not wood, then try this warm tone - http://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family/SW6112-biscuit/

Since you do have some plain wood pieces, I see that the end tables are nice and square - those I'd leave wood. The one you want to make funky is the table by the loveseat with the vintage step shelf - paint it in this persimmon tone - http://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family/SW6341-red-cent/ - or look for a brick red in spray paint at hd. Now you have a bit of color happening and something to work with for accent colors - key off that deep red-orange that is in the print of your loveseat upholstery.

Lamps on either side of the bed would be one terrific result of moving the bed to where you can use both tables there. You can watch at homegoods or target - target has some wood base lamps which would be better washed in the red cent paint (1/2 paint / 1/2 water) - you have enough brown. Neutral off white shades, pls.

Here are some bedding ideas - a lighter comforter cover (perhaps you can find a duvet cover and shams in a pale tan) like this comforter http://www.target.com/p/down-alternative-comforter/-/A-549432#prodSlot=medium_3_34&term=bedding+queen will help to make the whole room feel larger. Add a folded blanket across the end of the bed like http://www.target.com/p/threshold-pearl-knit-blanket/-/A-14151664#prodSlot=medium_3_31&term=full+bedding in the salsa color. Take the blanket with you to home goods or target or bed / bath / beyond to shop for accent pillows.

Since the sloping ceilings are not a problem to you, here's a radical suggestion: (well indulge me anyway!;) )

Angle out your bed from the bedside table corner facing into room
Angle sofa on white screen corner facing into the room.
Place book shelves under the sloping roof where the sofa originally was. Neater that way.

oops - I was writing when you were posting about blue and white bedding - sorry. If you are in loooove with the blue and white, then the room might need to be organized around it. If not, you might reconsider given your loveseat print. Can you post a link to the blue and white set?
yes putting bed and loveseat in front of window , white/cream contact paper on wood wall around window, some sheer curtains , blue and white pillows on love seat and white shag rug ,blue and white lamps would change whole look .... you even dont need to paint side tables.
I would put the bed in the low nitch. paint the wood wall white. Put the sofa under the window.
The new bedding is this, I am looking for curtains to match or just pull the room together. I'm also going to reupholster the love seat. Suggestions on whether or not I take on that DIY and with what fabric is on the table too, I haven't decided anything. Here's the bed under the window too. I don't think the couch can go on the other side without looking cluttered.

Yes, because the bed needs to be centered and the lamp out from the wall there. DANG!

If the bed goes back underneath, can it move down a bit, closer to the fan? Not a lot, but would there be room for the couch under the other window then??? I know you do not want the bed with the stove, either.
How about centering the bed on the wall with the 2 windows. Get one double rod the width of covering both windows and place a sheer across the whole width, with a curtain panel tied back on each side. It'll make the room seem wider and will hide some of the brown from the paneling. Then, if the width is right, place the couch at the end of the bed.

I like the bed best here I think. The left of the fan is the closet area, with a random white beam that my dresser fit perfectly into the awkward gap that was created by that. The couch can go under the window now too! I think I will like the bookshelves where the couch is. Ill get a picture of that once it gets done. Then I'm done pushing furniture around for the day ;) thanks so much for your help Abby! Probably the couch upholstery project and some organization stuff (small space!) will be my next discussions :) also, I hope you all can see these pictures better than I can, they look fine in my phone but get cropped in on the app! Hopefully it's different for everyone.

Perfect! You have been working and working and I am guessing you were doing it alone! OH, my! I hope it is not stifling in there!!! BUT you will sleep soooo much better tonight, knowing you have it all figured out! That is huge!!! What a fun space to call HOME!!! And you have dreams and plans, which I love, too. Good luck and please keep in touch with us all here. We love to snoop!!!

Oh, good! As I imagined that fan going full force for you right now....maybe because it is sooooo hot and humid where I live right now.
VERY nice! Love those windows!!! Now light a candle and pour a glass of cool refreshment and enjoy!

Looks like you have it resolved, but just in case, have you thought about floating the bed in the middle facing won direction(sleeping area) and letting the love seat back act like your headboard facing the opposite direction(sitting area)> If the loveseat isn't wide enough, put a sofa table between. The sofa table will provide a place for a clock and lamps to light when you sit or lie in bed.

Oh, I live in Lake Tahoe. Hence all the brown and wood and the A-Frame! It's smokey from a big fire in Yosemite right now and the fan helps!
Lake Tahoe........must feel like you are on vacation all the time! I have been following that devastating fire. Sooooo sad!
This is looking very nice. And if you ever want to change the look again, you might consider leaving the bed as you have it and place the love seat where it was in the original picture, but pulled out a little 1) so you don't bump your head and 2) if you can find or make a narrow library type table to go behind it with a lamp to one side it will create a cozy niche. Place the larger side tables by the bed, and perhaps 2 smaller glass top side tables by the love seat.
I had to share this one, I'm loving the bookcases there now! I think ill have to find somewhere else for the end table on the right and get a chair there! And some poufs maybe. Finally could do something with my mirrors, A Frame houses are the worst for wall decor!

Oh, honey! Look at you! You have been playing! I love it! I can just see you sitting there and putting things away and smiling!!! Hmmmm.....that is a LOT of wine corks! Do I need to have a talk with your mother!! That is just a girly girl area......love the mirrors and the lights!!! Love the idea of poofs! Those would really fit here! Treat yourself!!!

Can that little end table fit by the love seat, in front of the wall heater? How is the height and size? It is sooo fun and retro!
Just so much fun following your site. Abbyjean gave you great advice. I think you could use that end table by your bed and move one that is there now to in front of your couch for use as a coffee table. Love your new bedding, can't wait to see it in your room.

My phone is awful right now. The corks were donated by friends and gathered from weddings and rehearsal dinners ect. It took a while to get the many I promise! I don't want to put any wood furniture in front of the heater, it's an old school one that gets really hot!

Take a strecher canvas the size of your window onthe left. Paint what you would like and place it over the window . this will act as lighted headboard for your bed. Move table and lamp to the right of your bed and than angle the sofa. this will open up your space.I hope u like it.

Find a Murphy Bed frame for your bed and fold it up to the wall, leaving you open space to live in. I think your space is very cool.
The couch looks good angled and doesn't touch the heater, which is good, but I have this area of shelves that I will have to figure out what to do with. Super cluttered right now I know, but once I clear it out I am thinking of a tray with some coasters on the shelf closest to the arm of the couch.

Assuming that some of your decisions regarding this space are based on the location of electrical outlets since the one lamp I see remains squeezed up in the corner by the window. Are there outlets on the heater/shelving side of the space? I'm envisioning your sofa floating out a bit from where the bed is with the end tables on either side
I see the bed on the opposite side of the room under the eaves as the shelf is. Add some sconce style wall lamps to the right and left of it.

Keep the couch at the angle, but maybe move it over from that shelf a bit, so you still have access to that area and so the edge of the couch is at the edge of the window.....that way you still keep that window with the couch. The basket....love that there....would be under or with that wooden area between the windows. This still allows room to walk around the bed, which you did need.
I'm concerned the sofa is still too close to heater for it to be safe when you have to turn it on for heat; I'd reconsider its placement for the winter.

I'd run a wall of drapes from the shelf area to the end of the opening, and float the sofa in front of it where you had the end table.
Do you have a dining area set up? If not, place the sofa at the end of the bed and the dining area in front of the drapes.
For the shelving, get some deep baskets to hide the contents.
