LG Induction ranges - help!

last modified: 4 years ago

I am receiving mixed information regarding how induction performs, in general, and about LG in particular. Help please! Does anyone have first hand experience with LG? Does the LG actually require the pan to completely match their minimum size - or does the 60% burner coverage ratio work? We have been told specifically that ALL induction ranges work the same and a 60% coverage is standard for use - and we have been also told that we MUST meet the stated minimum pan size. It can't be both. I have All-Clad cookware. It is amazing when I take out the tape measure how narrow the bottoms are, particularly my workhorse 12" skillet. I love the LG Studio range, but if my pans won't work on it there is no point in having it. (If I go by minimums I will NEVER used the large element with any of my pots and precious few on the medium.) thank you!

Sorry i am not understanding the question . I have never encountered this min. pot size for induction . My clients who have induction have not mentioned this either .. I don't like induction but that is just me. I would contact LG and get some clarification as to this rule.

I did call LG - they say if the minimum size is not met, the element will not function. There are apparently no tolerance margins. Yet I have seen specific LG use videos showing a variety of pan sizes being used successfully. No problem at all! My pans' diameters are only out by 5 mm, yet LG said "no." It is difficult to find stock now in good induction ranges and this one is available. That is why I hoped for some direct personal information.

I don't have LG experience but the induction tops I've used were not super picky about pan size. My itty bitty saucepan had to be perfectly centered to work, but otherwise it wasn't a big deal.

    (I had a 1983 Kenmore and a 2010ish Windcrest.)

Is there a place with live ranges hooked up anywhere? If there is, bring your pot.

TorontoVeterinarian and wdccruise both have posted here about their LG induction ranges. TV recently moved to a new house and just bought another LG induction range. They are frequent posters here and should be along shortly to respond to your questions.

In the meantime, if you haven't already checked the owner's guides, minimum pan base sizes are listed on page 25.

Both the "60%" figure and the manual's minimum sizes are rules of thumb more than they are a specific prescription. The actual key is the amount of "detectable magnetic mass" that is within the induction field. This sometimes get confused with misguided notions that pans' bases must be perfectly flat and that only the parts in actual physical contact with the glasstop will heat on induction stoves. Burners' induction fields have a bit of height to them. Depending on the model, that can be roughly ¼-inch, more or less, above the glass before the field strength falls off to unusable levels, IME. That's how pans can still work on induction when a burner is covered with with paper towels, silicon disks or sheets, or a kitchen towel (as they are when used to catch fry spatter and sometimes for peace of mind by those who worry about metal pans scratching their cooktops' shiny smoothtop surfaces.)

So, FWIW, when I saw an LG model SE4617 demonstrated, and the presenter was using a 12" All Clad skillet on the largest burner, it seemed to work well even though the A-C skillet's flat part of exterior base is about 9¼" inches. (Well, at least that's the diameter on mine.) So slightly less than than the 9.5" minimum listed in the LG Owner's Guide, but it still worked, nonetheless. Seems, the 12-inch AC fry pans had sufficient magnetic mass within the range of the induction field to work on that LG's largest burner.

Hopefully, T-V and wdccruise will be along shortly with first hand user/owner info for you.

Not a fan of any LG appliances due to supply issue when parts are needed (which can be frequent) but no direct experience with their induction.

Well, God bless you jvvideo and wdcruise. Thank you! That is exactly what I needed to know. And that 12" AC fry pan was my greatest concern. It is my workhorse pan.

So - I was able to acquire the LSIS3018 for immediate delivery - a very big deal where we live! Thanks again, everyone for your help!

jwvideo, the LG LSIS3018 works beautifully with all of my pans. LG's insistence on pan minimums has no bearing on what I am seeing in my own home. Now, my small 1 qt does not work on the largest burner but no surprise, nor need, there. Beyond that, I have had zero problems getting excellent cooking temperatures and control. I am loving induction and this LG. The help I received here was invaluable. Thank you everyone!
