Lovely light filled room. First I would try exchanging the table that is between the two chairs with the round covered table next to the piano. Then bring those chairs closer to the table and see how that feels./That will give some breathing space to the piano area. Is that another end table behind the blue chair? Or is it just there temporarily?

What a nice cozy room. You could go a lot of different ways depending on budget and what your objectives are. If you don't want to spend a lot you could start by removing the round covered table and the cream side tables. Then exchange the big blue upholstered chair with the plaid accent chair. Don't angle the blue uphol. chair but keep it at right angle with the sofa. The barrel chairs are a nice size, so I'd keep them where the are - just maybe pull a little closer together. I'd get a new rug that is lighter in color and a little smaller in size. Instead of end tables I would use floor lamps flanking the sofa and an ottoman with tray to have a place to put feet up, as well as, a place to set a drink. Add some white decor by way of pillows, vases, and wall art to help lighten up the space.

Now if you want to totally scape what you have and do all new furniture then I'd suggest a small sectional in place of the sofa and upholstered chair.

In addition to the above comments, try exchanging the large blue chair with the smaller blue and white chair in the corner and bring the ottoman to that end of the room, or remove it altogether. It might require moving the sofa toward the end of the room with the two chairs, giving the large blue chair adequate space.

Thank you, Cubby. The round table was between the two club chairs and I moved it, but think it really belongs at the front of the room. The table is actually blocking a heater (this is a seasonal beach house and heater is used before June and then in October) and I would like to "hide" the heating unit. I was thinking of using the white table behind the blue chair as end tables for the couch, but would have to change the lamps or paint them. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks , Emily. I prefer to do minimal changes as it is only a summer house and closed up for the winter. It is a bright room in daytime, but the walls are all natural pine and it gets dark at night. I may need more lighting. The idea of using floor lamps is a possibilty and I will change the navy blue chair with the plaid chair. What kind of table would you suggest next to the blue chair? The ottaman between the two chairs could go in front of the sofa?

Actually the blue chair is not as large as it looks and the plaid chair takes up more space. I think the picture is not quite to real scale. Sorry about that.

If the plaid chair is larger than the blue one than try just moving the blue chair to the right of the sofa. Position it so that it's at 90 degrees and not angled as it is now. Then your walkway is in front of the fireplace.

I think the ottoman you have now is going to be too small to be placed in front of sofa, but try it and see what you think. The rule of thumb is 2/3 the length of the sofa so I feel something like this would be better suited for the furniture arrangement.

i moved the blue chair to the back window, but now the heating unit and building across the street are staring me in the eye. Any ideas on how to hide them or should I return the large round table to this spot?

Think in terms of a radiator cover for the heating unit (see pix below.) Match to stain or paint as you wish. Can be a slip-on type you remove when the heater is in use, or can be vented well enough to leave in place year round. Top down bottom up shades can control unwanted views or light. For summer months, I think a lighter carpet would add a lot to your space. A table with chairs should arrive 1" above or below the arms to be useful, so you may need to rethink all but the two white end tables. They work with the sofa. The two chairs look best angled, so a round table would be perfect with them. In summer, they might be nice flanking the fireplace or used in front of it with a game table. I'd also remove the fire screen and add a nice big fern in the firebox over summer. I've X'd some of the items I would remove from the room in the last two pix.

Don't want to add shades as there are too many windows to cover in this room, although the sun it too bright around 5 pm and I think I need something for those two windows. Would a tree or a tall plant work cover the outside view?

I see the X on the large round table. I moved it between the two chairs. Thoughts?

I liked the cream colored tables on the ends of the sofa, but the white lamps don't really do much for me on the cream table. Suggestions for the lamps....should I paint them or try to find something totally different? The bookcase in built in so removing it may be a problem. I guess I have too many things going on in this room, but i so appreciate your input. Thanks.

I think the skirted table is too tall for the chairs. I'm not really a fan; it is a look from a past era, IMO. Paint the bases of the white lamps. If you keep the carpet, you might try that red for them. If you want to match them to the table color, take a drawer to one of the better paint stores for a match. Do some measuring to decide whether or not to keep them. Changing the lampshades seasonally can do a lot for a room. When on the tables, the lamps should reach 58-64" from the floor. Check that if you decide to replace them. I like their chunkiness; it suits the chunky tables. Is that your front or back porch we see? I think you could use shades at the four end windows and leave the ones under the porch bare. Looks like you could be getting some sun fade from the ones where the two chairs are. A good way to start paring down is to remove everything that is knee level or lower, take everything off the walls, then remove everything you have sitting on table tops, mantel, bookshelves. Gives you a fresh eye on the room. Be judicious when bringing things back in.

Thanks for your suggestions. I will try several of your ideas and move furniture around from other rooms too. Much of what I have in the family room is in same color tones.

The porch is on the side of the house..two windows face the street and the other two are on the beach (don't want to cover that view). I have deep red lamps and will try those on the tables. It is a summer house so we enjoy mostly outside! Thanks for your help.

Consider a large sea grass rug instead of your current (beautiful!) rug to lighten up the space. You can buy ones that are synthetic if wear and cleaning of the natural fiber is a concern. Your home is lovely, but if you are interested in bringing more of a “summer” feel to your home, I would substitute a lighter rug to see what that looks like!

One other thought is to move both barrel chairs to the end with the piano. Keep the blue chair where it is and try the plaid chair with the ottoman over by the door where the left barrel chair now sits. If you remove the round table you could try the small black cabinet underneath the mirror and place the flower on it.

I love the coziness of the room! The first thing I would do to make a change though is to upgrade the rug to something more current. You could go in so many directions depending on the change you want. Definitely lighter, not oriental, pattern is possible though. There’s almost too much of a contrast between the dark walls and furniture and really light curtains and the rug could marry those two together.

If this is a beach house I would consider painting a lot of the wood white… the rest is cozy and cute as is and will look much more striking in a white background

No pictures yet, but I have moved the round table to the other end of the room between the two barrel chairs. The blue chair is in front of the radiator and I will get a radiator cover to hide the heater. I am keeping the cream colored end tables and have a matching table in front of the couch, but I am not sure what to do with the lamps on the tables. I need a contrast. Should I paint the wooden lamps red as has been suggested?
