How can I keep the mud from coming inside?

So I used to have an absolutely beautiful back yard. Think lush grass, I'd even roll it to put the stripes into the deep green sea of grass blades...Then I feel in love with another beautiful creature. This woman then became my fiancé. Though my fiance has a big heart, not only for me, but also dogs. At first one, then two, they soon multiplide to 3 large permanent dogs with up to sometimes over a dozen fosters. Needless to say I now have no more grass, a barren wasteland exists now.The amount of dust is INSANE. When it rains I swear it's muddied inside than out. So I don't know how to combat the problem. I've thought about mulch but I think they'd chew on them. I've thought about fake grass but for 2000 square feet the price would be too much. I've thought about landscape fabric and pea gravel but I think they'd dig it the fabric. I'm leaning towards 3 inches of pea gravel on the soil. I'm told it'd sink into the soil but I think 3 inches would be sufficient.I'm just looking for a good solution to keep the mud out of the house. One week goes by and everything seems to have an inch collected on it.
I still get my front yard for grass so I'm looking to turn the entire back to mud free.

Sorry but really what you need is a big dog run for the dogs and grass for you and probably a really good talk with your finace . I think there has to be a happy medium for both of you.

how about gravel and beautiful hardscaping, surrounded by garden beds? I imagine it will also be so much easier to see and clean up the poo.

I think a portion w/a good dog run/kennel for them, and a nicer yard for you would be a compromise.

Wow. How in the world can you foster up to 12 dogs plus your own big 3? the neighbors must love you lol. If 90% of the time, its just your 3 dogs, Id fence off either the right of left side of the deck for them to do their business and the rest is for leisure time w your pets. Honestly, it looks as if the dogs are pretty much left outside to their own devices. Patricia is right, I know your fiancee wants to save dogs, but the value of your home, you, and the neighbors sanity has to be appreciated. If the dogs come first, they always will. Good luck.

It is time for a long hard talk with your fiance. If she truly loves you, she should be willing to have only 3 dogs and no extras. 3 dogs can do lots of damage to a yard. Definitely have a dog run and keep dogs out of the house.

This is an old thread but it might have some useful information/ideas for you. Your backyard doesn’t look very big - what are the dimension? It also looks very barren - trees and shrubs and other plantings are definitely needed! As for tracking dirt into the house…. A number of towels in a basket, either on that deck or just inside the patio doors, is a good idea to use to clean and/or dry dog feet before letting the dog(s) back into the house. Successful living with dogs requires training and discipline on the part of both the people and the dogs, and the exercise and social needs for both the dogs and the people need to be addressed/planned for.
