Does catnip spread by underground runners?

I'm getting conflicting information from online sources. I realize catnip is a member of the mint family. However, it also looks a lot like other nepeta species I have grown that just formed a nice mound. I'm trying to decide if I should plant it in the ground or in a pot. Thanks.
