Ideal spot for an Ikea docksta table and some chairs. Can double up as your desk perhaps?

Hey! Thank you very much for your (quick) help. I also may think that this would be a good space for a desk or a table because it's a nice and bright spot.
I applied a floor plan. My room is the one on the green side (not the orange) with the typical corner (you can't miss it ;) ) The room is only 22,5 m² large not 25 like I wrote before. The room is about 5,4 x 4,1m.

You could also turn it into a reading area. Get a nice bean bag or comfy chair - I have found that having a designated reading spot for homework helps - plus with the position of the windows you will be using natural light so it won't strain your eyes as much. With the hardwood flooring I would suggest getting a rug there too (you can get some a unique shaped one that would fit right in there).

I don’t know your furnishing budget, but an arrangement like this might work, putting the desk in the alcove.

I would have a desk similar to this in the corner... it is modern....cool for a future to be engineer ...affordable as well...

Bed with storage underneath, hopefully it will fit in the left corner as you enter the room.


This example is probably too feminine for you, but it gives you an idea of how you could make a 'bedroom' in your room. Or by putting a wardrobe against the foot end of the bed.

My great grandmother was a Richter from Germany, so I'll pitch in and offer my help, cousin! Are you handy with tools and can you build things? I'd build a simple bench to fit that window as a seat. You can make it like a box with a hinged lid for storage of stuff like shoes, printer paper, etc. Paint it and toss a few pillows against the window sill and you have a spot for reading or entertaining. A storage ottoman in front of it can be used as a coffee table and another place to put stuff. Add a couple of storage bean bags where you can keep more stuff like outdoor/ski wear that can handle being sat on. This trundle bed with desk might be a good idea - two can sleep and the study area is built in. Then add a plush comfortable area rug for lounging in the floor. You can add pad under it for security and to make it comfortable enough for sleeping if friends drop by and need a nap before their next class.

but on the other hand when I think about it,its the only spot with the best light, and it's maybe better to put there a desk.

i would put my desk by the window. As someone who studied at uni for 6 years, looking out a window breaks up the monotony of studying

Hey Max,

Try to get a couch below the left window for a low seating. Also, below the right window, you can have a laptop table with a comfy chair that can be moved in the room where required. The storage for your books and stationery can be kept against the wall to the right, thus it will be close enough to your workstation and will not hamper the view.

A bean bag as suggested by Elisa, with a lamp overhead. Around the string forthe lamp fix some holiday lights. The hanging big lamp can help with reading at night. The holiday lights can go on for evenings with friends.

Hi Max. I would get a couple of the biggest, cosiest arm chairs you can squeeze into the space, place a floor lamp between them and an ottoman/foot stool in front. Voila! Living room. Great spot for reading day or night. If you put your table style desk (Ikea?) on the wall to the right and put storage shelves above, if you need a dining table it would be easy to clear and move out. Also good if you want to move the desk to view out the window or take advantage of the light. You have been given lots of great ideas already. Have fun.

This is a good idea to separate bed area from sitting if you have room.
I like the idea of desk by window and chair next to it with ottoman for lounging.

@cathieg I really like that idea with the armchairs in this corner! I like to read and Ithink this would be the place to do it. I'm going to search for some armchairs at Ikea. :)

Add window coverings like roman shades, can get ready made. Add a desk chair in corner of windows, add a small glass desk, place so you have room to get round it. Add small chairs in front of desk. Now you have a office and a dining table. Take other pic of rooms and we will help you there also.

You can use a tall bookcase with the back of the case to the bed as a combination "room divider" and storage for the window alcove side.

My suggestion would be to have a floating window seat built for the space. You would need a ply wood top and a base that are not attached to the wall but cut to the actual shape of the space. Foam can be cut to the size as well to make a great seating area for your self or company. You could pull a table up to it for dinning as well.

I was thinking a window seat too, with bookcases underneath, or a combo of office desk and bookcases, rather than one custom made just for that corner, you could do two straight bookcases.. one inside the other to line up with the corners.

That window is so fabulous it screams to have a desk, something really trendy and fun. Maybe a custom made out of something else with a cool shape. Definitely go with a platform bed with storage underneath and maybe even a bookcase headboard. You will need some type of Armour for clothing something massive to hold as much as possible. You can hang a TV from the wall or ceiling.

Like the first commenter, goveraxle, my first thought was a desk since I suspect that's where you'll be spending most of your time at home. Being able to look outside occasionally during long hours at a desk would be important to me. It sounds like you're leaning toward a sitting area and if that's what works best for you, then do it. Before investing in cozy reading chairs for that corner, I would be careful about turning your back to the outside (it's your only window). Also, if you're going to spend a great deal of your time at your computer (and, I assume, your desk) as opposed to sitting in armchairs reading, I would factor that in as well. I'm clearly in the desk camp on this one, but again, it's your space so "make it your own." Best of luck in your studies and in getting the room decorated! It's your home, even if it's only temporarily.

You need a functional room but if you can fit the furniture in the room comfortably, it can easily be moved around unless it is built in. In front of the window is not a good place for a study desk unless you are only going to study at night, too much glare on paper and screens Have fun with the room.

I agree with, 'decoenthusiaste' …I dont think it would be too costly or difficult for that matter, to condtruct a wide benched window seat. You could utilize the space it would create underneath for storage. A comforatable place to 'SIT' & study and/or 'LAY' & power nap. You could actually build it to form fit under both windows. I have no 'tools' on my phone as of yet, to be able to send you a sketch …DAMN I wish I did. Oh well good luck w/EVERYTHING & I really think you'll eventually be very, *COZY* there! *lol*

I disagree about the glare with a desk there.. I had mine in the sunroom for a long time and loved it to look outside from time to time.. unless the sun is directly in your eyes.. you can always have a sheer shade or curtain for those times..

I would but two colorful chairs there.

Max. whatever you do, please DON'T consider a bench seat in the window: who on earth wants to sit on a bench to study? You are right on target with a very comfortable arm chair - don't forget the ottoman! and side table. floor lamp is great here for after sundown. this would be your 'reading'/studying area. I lived in Germany for five years - it gets very chilly: add a rug under the chair/ottoman!
the ideas that detail separating the sleeping area are great - that's what I did in my Manhattan studio...[plus, my bed was very high for maximum storage underneath] anyway, across from that storage unit at base of bed could be two upholstered chairs, big low trunk topped with a big tray that doubles as coffee table - for 'living'. Here is another good place for either a pendant lamp above coffee table or side table, and/or another floor lamp. Plus, another rug to define the space. Add 2 meter x 1 meter mirror on floor leaning against wall - if space allows - adds the idea of big space.

I'm going to assume this is your dorm room. That being said, I'm going to assume there are rules on holes in the wall, or damage to floor, etc. A question you need to ask yourself...how long will I be here - a semester or two, or a few years. Are the things I buy for this space going to work if I get another place to live before graduation or will I even want them when I graduate. My daughter did very well with her dorm room with items gotten on freecycle, Goodwill, and the Salvation Army store. When she finished school, the items went back for resale or she passed them on to incoming students. Lighting was very important and cheap lamps did very well!! Good luck!!

It is a cozy space in the room. You could either place your dining table if it is wide enogh, make it your study area by placing your desk or I even think your bed will be great there same issue as with the table it all depends if it is wide enough the space. The other solution is to have a custom seating unit with storage underneath and a round dining glass table but that could be costly.

Place casual coffee table is a good suggestion!

You know, Max, I was looking through a magazine the other day and thought of you when I saw a table that slides under the side or front of a chair for working in comfort. Initially, I'd only thought of the small and not very interesting ones I'd seen to that point but this one was a little larger. You could have a laptop AND books or a little work space on it as well. If you had a really comfy chair in the window area and one of those kinds of tables, you could use it for work as well as eating or something else. I also saw in the IKEA catalogue a number of photos with a curtain rod hanging from the ceiling to define a space in a room. It could be by your bed if you like the ILLUSION of privacy. A curtain hanging from the ceiling also gives you an opportunity to back another piece of furniture up to it as if it was a real wall. IKEA has a shelving unit that can be used both vertically and horizontally with cube spaces. There are drawer inserts and baskets you can put in the spaces for storage (even some clothing storage). If you had one placed horizontally in front of a curtain you could use it for all your tech. for music and TV (though you probably have EVERYTHING on your computer now). Or - without a curtain, you could get one or two of those to form an open wall with heaps of storage. IKEA is certainly an inexpensive way to provide yourself with great simple design and storage with furniture that can be repurposed easily. What's more, you can take it apart again and move everything using a car. Go on-line and check out the IKEA catalogue. Use your space right up your walls. How exciting to be going to school and setting up your flat with things all new to you. tMake that chair really comfy, though. MAYBE it could even swivel so you could move your laptop screen away from the light but have your BOOK with the light on it. You'll be using it LOT! I like the desk filling the space as well but then you'd always end up sitting up properly there instead of lounging. Lots of terrific ideas. Lots of terrific pieces of furniture too, but perhaps some are not meant for a student budget, even if you COULD find them where you live.

It's a nice Space, something like these loungers might look good there and be really functional and soften up the corner .... it's also lightweight, relatively inexpensive and easy to move around the house when and if you need them elsewhere
