Bed Frame Suggestions

last modified: 4 years ago

I rent out my guest room out on Airbnb - a private room while I am in residence in a very hold Philadelphia rowhome.

The guest bed is currently a full sized mattress on a futon frame. I am considering upgrading to a queen size, and wondering what type of frame would be best.

I'm thinking that with the wood floors and furniture, metal might be best, though would consider wood/painted. I don't like the look of fabric/upholstered headboards.

If you're curious about my home/listing, here it is: Airbnb Listing

Here are photos of the room & current bed:

I LOVE my own/master bed (sorry it's messy.)

As a long-time contributor on Houzz and a vacation property manager for the past 19 years, I do have a few ideas for you. First, the bed does need a headboard and the room needs a comfy armchair for reading, texting/chatting. Without a nice chair, like it or not, the headboard should be soft and comfy to lean on. I would move the little desk between the windows and hang a mirror over it so guests don't have to go into the bath to check themselves before exiting the room, and it can double as a makeup table. Then center the bed and the one colorful piece of art exactly on that wall. I think your orange coverlet would look better with the art than the purplish one you're using. Get a second night stand or table that arrives at mattress height. Look for a pair of matching lamps that will arrive at 58-64" above the floor when placed on the two night stands. They should not have skinny bases but a bit more volume to coordinate with the stands. I would remove the chest in the recess at the foot of the bed and add a small scale upholstered armchair and a floor lamp there, along with the orange picture that is now between the windows. Remove all the other art. Place the informational materials in a main gathering area like the kitchen or other room guests have access to visit. Fold up the luggage rack and store it in the closet. Let the guest place it where they find it convenient.

Love your brass headboard (and house).

What is the budget? Footboard, too, or just headboard?

Decoenthusiast - thank you. I wish there was room for a "comfy chair"! Definitely considering a headboard, but those plush fabric ones just look terrible to me - even if they're comfortable, I don't want them in my home.

There is a full length mirror in the room. If I move the desk to between the windows - there won't be enough room to access that side of the bed. This is a small room.

Bedding changes all the time. The purple isn't on there, now, just a photo I had on hand.

Will consider switching out tables and lamps - just not matching. Thank you!

Jinx - the metal frame is actually nickel, not brass, and I love it too!

Could go any way on headboard/footboard. Well, you've seen my house, comfortable, colorful, but not too fancy, budget should go in that direction... not fancy, but not cheap looking either.

Take a look at Ballard Designs beds.

I like the simplicity of this one:

    https://www.ballarddesigns.com/lorraine-metal-bed/furniture/bedroom/beds-daybeds-headboards/555186?listIndex=11&uniqueId=555186

And the beautiful curves of this one:

    https://www.ballarddesigns.com/furniture/bedroom/beds-daybeds-headboards/

This one might be too ”heavy” of a look, I just like the antique style: https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/kelly-clarkson-home-felicity-standard-bed-w003317914.html?piid=512787271#7ktzyu2vfq-3

    I like this style: https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/winston-porter-bronny-low-profile-platform-bed-w004847050.html

I’m not done, still looking around (not just for metal beds). I love spending other people‘s money. :D

Probably a dumb question, but have you looked around at any antique/vintage stores, or online like Facebook Marketplace? I’m picturing a cool 60’s - ‘70’s caned bed or similar.

Jinx - thank you, I did see some of those on my searches! The first is my favorite of the bunch. I have a preference for straight lines. Here's one I liked:

Good idea to check FB marketplace, etc.! I haven't done that.

Yes! I like your choice best. Fits the room without overpoweing it.

I'm glad you're saying no to an upholstered headboard. That totally grosses me out - sharing a bed with strangers who would have their heads against it, too. Maybe if it were washable, like vinyl, but otherwise, yuck!
I think the metal bed is a good choice for your room. They take up less visual space and add some interest. Just be sure with a queen that it has support down the middle of the bed and not just the outer frame. I think that would be important in a rental that will get a lot of use. And also that it's high enough off the floor to easily clean under it.

Olychick - good point about cleaning upholstery - I have cats, and cat hair gets everywhere! Not to mention scratching (and, yes, the cats do go in the guest room) - the cats would totally scratch an upholstery headboard!

Good points about support down the middle and the bed being high enough to clean underneath!

Piggy backing on this post, since we're also looking for a replacement queen bed frame for our Airbnb. What brands have people found that are *sturdy*?? The one we had (a Wayfair special) broke!! The other two Wayfair frames in our Airbnb have been fine, but now I'm nervous about buying another one.

I would go with name brand pieces, not discount places like wayfair or target or overstock, or Ikea, etc. I'd look for Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, Room and Board, Ethan Allen, etc. There are many quality name brands besides those and some of the ones I listed probably have lesser quality lines, too, so no guarantees about their stuff, but I think you have a better chance.
Believe it or not, Costco has really good quality stuff (but probably not real high fashion, but reasonable) with a great return policy. If I were furnishing an Air Bnb place, I'd be looking at used, quality stuff - things that you can verify the brand. Look at consignment stores in your area. I'd rather have a high quality, slightly less than the latest style piece, rather than poor quality, latest fashion pieces in my rental (and in places I choose to rent).
For the OP of this thread, I have no experience with the brand, but have always read it's high quality metal bed frames: wesley allen iron beds

I'll be following this as we are going to be shopping for a queen bed for our guest studio. Upholstered headboards totally gross me out. I think about how after I am sick I wash all my bedding and it would bother me to no end to not be able to wash the germs out of my headboard!

I like the look of a metal bedframe but I spend lots of time each night reading in bed. Any time I have slept in one, the metal vertical headboard posts are supremely uncomfortable on my back, no matter how many pillows I use. What gives? How do you read comfortably in these?

    last modified: 4 years ago

Kendrah - I read in bed every night. With proper pillow stacking, I have no problem being comfortable. You may need at least one of those pillows to be thick and firm. I use three pillows to read.

I would suggest a Big Fig mattress and frame. The mattress is comfortable and the bed frame is quite sturdy. The frame can be independent of the headboard and footboard.

IMO never a foot board I have tall sons and they hate footbosrds they also make making the bed a bit more difficult. What style do tyou want in this space it does not need to be like the rest of your house and IMO should be like a 5 star hotel room . IMO all bedframes are made solid I have had cheap ones and expensive ones they all lasted. A really good quality mattress is a must and IMO the space should look like it was put together forthis purpose not a spot to put leftover furniture pieces. I agree to two matching night tables with matching lamps large enough to be able to read in bed . The bedding needs to look lux and plump and inviting that is not what you have now. A place for luggage . Who is your client usually ? These are two very different spaces but both inviting

I agree -- NO footboard. They just get in the way, especially in a small room. Be wary when buying a used bed frame -- most that I found for sale last year were headboard, footboard, and wood side rails. You will want a headboard and a metal frame that is probably purchased elsewhere. I bought mine at Sam's, and it has held up very well (approx 7 years). I would buy multiples of this bedding and wash the outer duvet cover every time you have a new guest.

I agree, Kendrah, metal bed frames are not comfortable for reading in bed. Most are too weak to sit against. I'd go with name brand solid wood. Search Facebook Marketplace. I bought a great 1970s or 1980s solid wood queen headboard for about $125 a year ago.

Patricia Colwell: good advice about the footboard. Will definitely consider not having one! I won't do matching and I won't make a room in my home look like a hotel room: lux or otherwise. It's just not worth it to me. I need to love my home, and having a part of it look like a hotel won't make me happy.

Jinx: I agree. A lot of people don't, and those people should and do stay elsewhere. :-)

IloveMyLife: I hear you on the footboard - glad that you & Patricia brought that up!

Everdebz - yes, the futon frame has matching... I guess they are headboard and footboard, but both are low.

Another vote for no footboard. On our king bed I use the metal frame sold with the mattress and boxsprings and push against the wall a headboard that used to be my grandparents. When my grandparents were first married they slept in two separate twin beds - ala I Love Lucy. I guess when they got tired of shtupping in a twin bed, they fused the twin headboards together into one king. But it is too big by an inch on each side and won't fit into the metal bed frame that came with my mattress. I have never had a problem just keeping it pushed against the wall behind the bed. The duvet kind of hides the slight over hang on each side.

Here it is pic of it in our old house - a Philly row house too.

I would just do a headboard. I know you like bedsteads but this isn't really for you to sleep in, it's for some semi-random person to sleep in.

We had one of these for the queen bed until I had a custom platform that is scribed level to the floor made which closes off the underneath of the bed entirely because I don't want the cat under there.

This holds the box spring perfectly in place and it is very rigid, doesn't squeak or move at all. And it has rounded edges and a center support. It's just not tall for cleaning under. (If you notice most hospitality beds are blocked out underneath.)

Palimpsest - what the heck is a *bedstead*? Do you mean that I should get a frame that is made for *both* a boxspring and a mattress?

I do need something tall enough to clean underneath.

PS: sometimes my partner, friends and family members sleep in my guest room, so, not just semi-random people. :-)

I mean you really like an actual furniture bed with a head and foot board and siderails. I am suggesting a frame that you can just find a head board that you like and attach it. The one above is made to hold both a boxspring and a mattress. Whether you go with a full boxspring and mattress or a bunky board or a thin boxspring is preference.

I actually think the reason for hotel beds being so high has little to do with 'luxury' you can have a perfectly luxurious bed that's 15" off the floor. Hotel beds are at almost table height so it does not kill the backs of the staff who are cleaning and changing a bunch of beds every day for eight hours.

Ah, thank you. While I love my own bed (with head & foot board, but no siderails) I don't think I have that preference, necessarily. Others have told me I should have a headboard on my guest bed for a more finished look, and most of the frames I like that come with a headboard come with a footboard as well.

You've convinced me that I should *not* have a footboard and that makes total sense.

Due to cleaning and cats, I won't buy an upholstery headboard. It seems that most think I *should* have a headboard of some type, and that some think a metal headboard isn't comfortable for reading (though my experience is different.)

So, a wooden headboard, despite all the wood in the room? Should I go with wood painted a neutral color?

I've never purchased a headboard separate from a frame. Are they all universal so that any headboard will attach to any frame?

I think I'm going to get a queen platform bed with at least enough room underneath to be able to use a Swiffer.

Thanks, everyone! I'm still open to suggestions, even if I'm rejecting out of hand the "hotel look."

Platforms may not all have attachments for a headboard because they are platforms, not a bed frame. Bed frames are pretty much universally designed to attach to the appropriate sized headboard.

I have a lot of traditional caning in my house, Baker headboards and regency chairs, thebes stools, and two aesthetic movement chairs much too delicate for anybody to actually sit on. If the cane is backed, like above, it may be a little difficult to keep clean, and if it's open, like mine is, I am not sure I would put it in a room used as an AirBnb, because any carelessness can break it. I think solid wood would be your best bet for this purpose.

The other thing you could do, which is how a lot of hotel rooms are, is have the headboard attached to the wall by a cleat. Actually that's how the headboard is in our primary bedroom.

    last modified: 4 years ago

It’s backed. I wouldn’t recommend a fully caned headboard, a delicate (full) vintage one, or an open one …. I don’t think this amount or style would be a problem either way.

    Anyway, good luck, Carrie.

I think you want to capitalize on the charm of your house for your particular AirBnB clients and I am not sure that's it.

I don't know where you are in the city but my neighborhood is overrun with AirBnb of a different sort, unlike it's original intention --which is what you are doing...you are doing AirBnb as originally intended.

Entire buildings have been taken over in my neighborhood, so they are running defacto hotels with none of the regulations of a hotel, which really is not the original intent, nor is it really fair, and they are rugless, generic and anonymous, furnished with RTA Ikea type stuff sort of like that bed, so I have a bias against it. I think you want something a little cosier looking. Sorry to let my obvious bias show.

Palimpsest - I'm near 3rd & Washington, and, yeah, investors buying up properties to run Airbnb venture capitalism, so annoying. We *do* have to pay hotel taxes, even people like me with one room rented out have to pay hotel taxes. The city just *did* pass stringent regulations - unfortunately, they mostly apply to me as much as they apply to the investors. So, they're going to hurt the little guy as much as, if not more than, the big problematic companies.

I probably share your bias. And I'm stubborn on top of it. I just am having a hard time finding a bed that I like (and, yes, even if anonymous strangers are staying in it, I have to like it) and that I think will work well for the intended purpose...

Try a flea market if any are in your area.

I think bedding would matter a bit more than the bed itself... some will spill soda, or lotion, etc.. anywhere and everywhere... imo, have it be easy to clean.
