What I always call a terrapin. More of a land turtle. My son had one for a few days. He set it in the yard for a couple of minutes, when he came back it was gone.

It certainly looks like an Eastern Box Turtle. When I lived in MD, I would find them with some regularity hiking through wooded areas. I would also find them in the Sandy Hook area of MD (on the other side of the Potomac River across from Harper's Ferry) when looking for good fishing spots. About a month ago, I found a large snapping turtle trying to make a nest against my house in the pachysandra. She eventually moved on as she discovered that it was not an easy spot to dig.

I see one occasionally here in my yard, and it does move much faster than I realized they could move. Neat find, Julia

Its fun to find critters in the yard, no turtles in my garden. Last summer my husband rescued a turtle in the road in front of our home. We have a park with a retention pond across the street, he was taken to that area. That turtle would have been crushed by a car.

Cool find. I'd say Eastern Box Turtle too. My kids used to find these and keep them a couple of days then let them go.

Neat! I had one here a few days ago. I was surprised it vanished so quickly, considering how slow turtles move.
