Would you use a square coffee table or round?

Updating coffee table. That is all I can afford for now. I realize the camel leather sectional and entertainment center are not ideal but they were custom and husband is not ready to part with them. Also he is not open to painting it but I am working on that. ;) What is the best way to refresh the table without making the other furniture look so glaringly dated?

Should I stick to glass because there is already a lot of wood and heavy furniture? I would prefer to do stone but would that be too heavy also? Kitchen is open to this family room and nearby breakfast table is 72” oval with its leaf.

The color here is not accurate. Walls are neutral like the top photos. Chairs are an oatmeal linen. Table has a cream base with a rye stain top.

Below are options I’m considering. Finish is not a dealbreaker as I am willing to repaint if the size and style work for the layout.

It’s not easy to update just one piece, but I think the table is a good choice. It‘s certainly not too heavy, feels more modern and light and will connect with your furniture.

I wouldn’t add strong pops of color just for color sake, as you mentioned you like neutrals. There are so many ways to add interest by layering, texture, pattern, art. You could change rug to a less busy design with colors that better help pull the space together and be sure it includes creamy white to complement/bring out coffee table’s surface. Look for updated cushions, combining solids and patterns and accessorize coffee table. There is a lot of helpful information on Pinterest. The accessories and style of rug below would be lovely in your room, a nice refresh.

Could also consider redoing shelving and again reference Pinterest for ideas.

For size reference, the current coffee table is 43 x 43.

Love the idea of a stone top but am very open to other ideas.

IMO keep what you have. I really like the current coffee table. I would change the lamp and restyle the shelves

If you could ever paint the TV hutch a light color/creamy white..that would really give the room a bigger and lighter feel...love the idea of a metal table..round,very simple lines would look great and give the room a clean fresh look.

I don't see why that matters at all. I think it would make the room feel very spacious and open.

Agree on a round metal table with clean lines. If you get an inexpensive one, would you consider replacing your area rug with something lighter?

I like the coffee table that you have. The black iron seems to match the light fixture over the dining table.

@jyyanks Yes I definitely would. I gravitate to neutral solids so I was trying to break out of my comfort zone and bring in some color and a print lol.

@Maureen Do you think this table could work the same way in my space as in your inspo photo above, even though the living room is much larger than mine? And similar end tables?

This is my favorite out of the other options I posted, however I need to be sure that it is not too heavy for the rest of my space? I would prefer something other than glass (just ready for a change) but need better accessibility for drinks other than an ottoman with tray. However I wonder if this room needs more layers/texture/fabric… ? I’m stumped and would love your thoughts.

We might recommend a round coffee table just since there are so many things that are already rectangles and hard edges.
