Why no railing or half wall?

Love using space, and I understand the appeal to kids of a cozy high up nook. But this is a huge safety risk, offers no bedroom privacy, and the side of a mattress is a sloppy look. A half wall coming up to the base of the clerestory window over the stair would let light in and would help in all respects.
