Remodel using remote professionals

We purchased an older dated design home in beautiful Sedona, AZ. The plan was to open up the main living area, new kitchen, upgrade fireplace and create a timeless transitional warm feel with a professional design. After interviewing a few general contractors we decided to hire Jim Brophy, owner and General Contractor for October 5 fine home builders. His office is located in Long Beach, CA about 7 hours drive from our home. This is where remote technology has proven it can be done. He hired a digital home measuring company that produced CAD format measurements and we "zoomed" our way with October 5 into our final project for bid. The cabinets are from Crystal Cabinets where Mr. Brophy is one of Chrystal 's most experienced and creative approved design contractors. The entire floor plan changes, kitchen order, build details were all digitally produced for our use. The plans were then out to bid in our local area where we found Dez- Dal Inc Construction to be our on site general contractor, project manager and installer. The two contractors zoomed through the details and demo was on its way while the cabinets were on order. In this day and tech age, designing remote offers a great solution with precise details. The project only took 90 days to complete and move back in. The concept was to consider the open space connecting the living room, entertainment area and kitchen. October 5 created a style in the kitchen that complements the living area with many design features.
The goal from the design was when you enter the home it gives you a welcoming sense that says," there is something about this that feels so right and it's beutiful". My wife described it best, " I love my new furniture, I mean my cabinets".
With naturall 3cm quartzite, connecting design elements and detailed finishes by the Dez-dal Inc team, we had our expectations exceeded. Thank you October 5 and Dez-Dal!!!

I am confused by this story. Why did you need two General Contractors? Why couldn’t the local GC that you hired do everything? Crystal Cabinets are sold in Sedona where you live, as well as in Phoenix. Not sure I get the purpose of the remote contractor. It sounds expensive and duplicative since evidently you have a good local contractor. Or - this post is spam for the remote contractor and the hows and whys are not the point.

And…no vent hood above the gas cooktop? Seriously? It took two geniuses to come up with that poor design?

@darbuka - in the first pic it looks like they have a vent up at the ceiling. Fairly useless being that high up - most of the smoke and grease will not make it that far, and will circulate around that space. My sympathies to the homeowner who will have to climb a ladder to get that filter down to clean it.

@M Miller….ah, yes…I see the vent now. Totally useless. And, yeah…how often will the homeowner bother to clean the filter? What an inconvenient pain, especially for something so inefficient! A true example of form over function.

    Puff piece.

There are useful conversations that could be had about using remote professionals. This is not it.

Total puff piece. I am in serious doubt of how much, if any, came from the homeowner. Not enough to flag it as spam, but wow this screams "marketing."

I also have no idea why someone would hire a remote GC who then "theoretically" supervises the GC who is on location.

The purpose of having a GC is that they supervise the project and have a trusted work force in the location who they coordinate. I have no idea why you would go to the expense of paying for someone off site.

Perhaps an architect who would make a few site visits as needed. Even in terms of "visual design" it was better to have my designer in my area - she was able to be in the space and visualize the light and other factors which might not be evident in photos; she had sources in the area; she supervised as did my GC.

Hello friendly responders. This is not spam. It is a real life experience. The design from the remote contractor was the main point. Once the concept and design was created the on site contractor took the project from there.  I am curious what occupations the responders work in. The construction business?

Having a hood was a consideration, but that would have obstructed the open space and red rock views.. Unless we are cooking a grease fire, the hood is not really in use. Sorry to see so many missed the purpose of the post. It actually is a testomial that these two well know contractors have the skill sets to design remote and of course use a local contractor for the project. The remote contractor did not oversee nor was paid to oversee the on site process.

FYI, most contractors with design build in this area are booked out forever and impossible to get on the schedule to be completed in this time frame.

Anyone who gets anyting done in 90 days impresses me. Chase turned a used car lot into a state-of-the-art bank in 90 days here in Sarasota several years ago.

FWIW you didn't hire a GC who operated remotely - you hired a designer.

It wouldn't have been my choice to hire a designer remotely because there are all kinds of logistical advantages of having a designer who is full service at the actual location. I am not sure why you needed a design build since you hired a designer and then a separate GC/

Helen, the design services October 5 is a general contractor that design builds. Since they were not local the build was not an option.
