Single Beds VS Bunk Beds

Tell us: What did you prefer when you were a kid? Or, if you have kids, what do they prefer?

I grew up in a single bed, but I will admit I wished for a bunk bed almost every year for my birthday. :P

Vote below for the Single Bed or the Bunk Bed!

Those single beds are one of my all time favorite spaces on Houzz! I do have bunk beds at home, but I totally LOVE the other space.

I know most kids loved bunk beds, but I always liked a beautiful, special, just for me single bed. The bigger and wider and more pillows, the better :)

Kids will always say they want bunk beds, but they do prefer to sleep in a larger bed. I love that first photo,,I've been admiring that room for a while:)

Single beds in most cases. As an adult (and tall too) trying to clean the top bunk of a bunk bed without knocking myself unconscious is virtually impossible.

We had a loft bed in my daughters room for a while which was good. Not as high as a bunk bed but high enough for kids to play underneath.

As kids, we had bunk beds in one room for 2 , then 2 smaller rooms for 2 singles (4 kids - 2 boys and 2 girls, made everything work out well).
IN the winter we had the bunk beds up, in the summer my parents took them down. This was pre-AC everywhere, so no one wanted to be on top bunk on hot muggy days/nights. I guess this was my parents way of making sure mattresses and area behind the beds got cleaned at least twice a year. Luckily, the room was big enough to do this. And over the years, sometimes that was the girls' room. sometimes the boys'. We all had our turns.

We (my kids) now have the bunk beds - sanded and refinished to update 60's wood finishes to 90's (when my kids were little). But my sons are at high school and university age - I just decided older son does not get to take one bunk with him to university. So an Ikea bed for him! He or his brother can have the bunks when they have their own kids!

We had bunks beds that converted to single beds as we got older. Great design.

I think every kid wishes for bunk beds. But every kid likes the top bunk. When they're a little older, many bunk beds can be converted to twin beds

Bunk beds look cute and my boys are begging for bunk beds but all I can envision is them doing skydiving jumps off them which brings me right back to reality :) I do think some of the built in ones are really really cute though. :)

All my life growing I had wanted a bunk bed, but unfortunately I wasn't opportune to have one. Even though I am a grown up now I still have soft spot for bunk beds

My son likes Bunk and my daughter likes trundle. Generally kids want some thing fun, something different and place to hideaway. Kids feel secure in their bunk beds rather than open bed. According to Feng Shui, once they feel secure, they sleep better.

As a child; bunk beds. As an adult; single beds because I know of horrible injuries to kids from bunk beds.

my kid wouldn't get out of her crib until she first experienced a (lower) bunk -- the cozy cave feeling, I guess. nobody sleeping up top, but it will be fun when friends come over!

It depends on the space you have. There are some great bunk set ups out there, but if you can get away with singles why not do it. I shared a room with my twin brother for 14 years in single beds and bunk, either way we were ready to get our own rooms.

Will I be branded as a spoiled only child if I vote for a double bed with room for stuffed animals, or better yet the family dog?
I'm with you, feeny-when I visit my son, I sleep in the bottom full size bed of my granddaughter's bunk, and she sleeps up top. It's a little claustrophobic, and I have to move about 25 pillows and stuffed animals just to get into the bed !

I go with single beds, although every child (even me) dreamt of having a bunk bed, it wasn't that I really wanted one but rather for the fun of it... I think most of us thought like that perhaps?? Now, adults might find it either 'enclosed' at the bottom thinking the top bed will fall on them, or the top one would feel strange closer to the ceiling! That what I have heard people say who have had them.

Charmean, so true haha , I never thought of that!

I have 2 boys that share a room. They would rather have bunk beds but we have 2 singles because we like the way it looks. But we did buy beds that would stack in the future and turn into bunk beds when they get a little older. Kidsbedland.com has lots of bunk beds to view.

Grew up sharing bunk beds with my sister. They came down periodically, when we asked. Honestly, I felt more like it was just my room when I was in the bunk and couldn't see my sister. She liked the cave feeling of the bottom bunk too so it was more often bunk than down.

From the Gramma's perspective. We have a small room for the grands. We went with bunks because the room is so small - and every time they're coming from CT to visit I have to drag a ladder up from the basement to tackle that top bunk. They're built in on 3 sides and the kids aren't old enough to make them up themselves yet. I always end up sweating and using some VERY ungramma-like language. Love the grands - but hate those bunks!

I used to think bunks were the best....until I tried to make one and keep it neat. Twin beds ,....for Sure!

Having raised 4 kids, we've had single twins and loft beds when the kids were smaller, each was lucky enough to have their own room. And as they each got older, most got full/queen.

I grew up with 2 twins in my own bedroom (my own room) and then slept on the top bunk in my college dorm. Even at 18/19 and very limber, it became a nuisance to climb up and down...the fun of it wore off. It was also new to me then to feel the bed moving when my roomie below moved in her bunk!

Bunk beds may be more fun, but single beds are more practical. Also as kids get older, they value their independence more.

Single beds are more comfortable and look classy. Kids generally like bunk beds, but feel more comfort in single beds. As the kids grows, they needs some space for them and prefer single beds.
