Condiments for hot dogs…….

While watching ”Bear”, a surprisingly good series on Hulu (Lip from “Shameless” stars as a chef), he sets up for a child’s birthday party in an early episode.

Its an outside party, hot dogs will be served. He does not bring Ketchup, Cetchup or Catsup for the dogs. He receives flak for not supplying the red stuff.

So… Mustard or Ketchup for you? Or both?

Never ketchup. Not on a dog or a burger. Ketchup is for the fries.

Ketchup is not even for fries. Mustard is a good dipping sauce for fries.

Mtn, I'm sorry, but, while salt probably belongs everywhere, sugar does not. Sweet relish is just ick. Mac salad containing sugar is ruined.

Now, I contradict myself when I use BBQ sauce on my burger. It has sweet, but also heat and smoke.

I love a good hotdog! Dijon or brown mustard plus a little French’s, sweet relish, ketchup, and sauerkraut! And a “good” bun. I never had ketchup on a hotdog until I was a grownup; tried it once and never looked back.

malt vinegar for the fries 😉

I too watched The Bear and really enjoyed it. I have followed Mattie Matheson on Instagram for a while now. He has a minor role and is a producer. As a chef, I'm sure he kept it real. Warning to others though, this show may have set a record for the number of f-bombs launched.

Sorry but only mustard ( and since Hebrew National stopped making it a few years ago, only Batampte will do thank you). I do like to add sauer kraut as well.

The mustard is around $3 or $4 when I can find it but I see Am has it for $8.

    Let's be real.

Yes, all beef ( usually Hebrew National) very well done on a grill, never boiled thank you very much. Having it tonight actually!!

I haven’t had a hot dog in decades. But if I were going to……..

The best hot dogs in the world……or at least in Los Angeles.

I almost never eat a hot dog . Once in awhile I’ll buy a Costco doggie as I am walking out. I cant stand mustard, raw onions or relish . It’s ketchup all the way ( even if i have to scrape it off the wall — jk). I like sauerkraut, too too, but cant even remember the last time i had that.

Chimichurri, mayo and tomatoes for me

Here's a little personal interest story. A half century ago, Monticello, NY was a very popular resort and tourist town. All of the big hotels offered some of the top talents of the day and the small community was jammed packed with all kinds of people.

The most popular restaurant on the main street was Kaplan's, an outstanding Kosher deli and dining establishment for many years. There was always a line outside the door and down the block at Kaplan's. There was also a service window from which customers could buy hotdogs with whatever you wanted on them, cold fountain drinks, and hot knishes. I was the much adored hot dog girl in 1970, after which I graduated to waitress for another year.

We sold thousands and thousands of hotdogs from that window......oh, the stories I could tell.

The best time for a hot dog is at the ballpark.

    ^^^ Love! 😍

I am normally vegetarian but i will eat an outdoor grilled dog once every 5 years. my husband calls me a heathen because i use ketchup.

As we again dicuss ketchup, TJ’s is delicious. Slightly reminescent of bbq sauce.

I love hot dogs. Just a tiny schmear of mustard, a little mayo, a bit of relish, and ketchup dotted on - just a couple of dots.

Or, slaw and chili with a knife and fork.

Or, kraut and a little mustard.

The best dogs used to be sold at the Atlanta airport. When I was a flight attendant, I worked a flight that arrived at ATL about midnight. One of the crew would get off and make a dash for the hot dog stand to get dogs for the entire crew. I haven’t been able to duplicate those dogs. IIRC they were dressed with chili, cheese, and slaw, at a minimum. Messy as all get out.

The kids had among their favorite books "Stan the Hot Dog Man". Sweet story.

Like lisaam I am a vegetarian, but I am really enjoying the discussion of a nostalgic food and especially how location really matters when eating.

I have so many memories of eating very simple foods like PB&J sandwiches which out camping, hiking, or lounging on the beach that are very reminiscent of Ida's picture. Simple food in a beatuiful location just tastes amazing. Over Thanksgiving I did some offroading with my in-laws and my sweet MIL packed hummus and rice crackers for me since the meat eaters had meat and crackers. It tasted amazing even though it was so simple. This was a picture I took of the area.

Back to the topic at hand: hot dogs. I struggle to find a tasty vegetarian hot dog. I think the closest would be Light Life Italian Sausages, which are not really the same. I like them with sauerkraut. If I do find a reasonable vegetarian proxy for hot dogs, I think I'd do relish and ketchup and mustard. I love all the condiments. That might be because vegetarian fake meats can use all the flavor help they can get.

Mayo only on Ball Park Franks (not all beef). If winter, add Wolfe Brand Chili with onions and cheese. (BTW, I don't put sugar, ketchup, on my meat.)

There are a few things I eat maybe once or twice a year, always in the summer: hot dogs, fried clams, and smores. My hot dog must be grilled with good burn marks, almost burnt, with brown mustard. I would allow chopped onions if available, but nothing else.

I have already had 2 out of 3 this summer. Still haven’t had my fried clams yet. And those would be strips, not full belly because gross, and with tartar sauce. Fries on the side, with ketchup.

And now I want a hot dog. Might have to have a second one before the summer is over.

@rhizo_1 (North AL) zone 7 I'm glad I came back to read here. I totally remember Kaplan's. I think it was the summer of 71 I was a counselor at a sleepaway camp in the area and I do recall walking into Montic1ello a few times. Didn't Kaplan' s have the college banners from all over the place? I also remember occasionally if someone had a car we went to hang out there in the evenings. (for me it was definitely the summer of 71).

    waving hello!

I don't remember when I last had a hot dog, but it's been decades.

I make my own sauerkraut and I make my own mustard. I use a bit of the sauerkraut juice in the mustard, which has both yellow and black mustard seeds as well as yellow mustard powder. I use white wine instead of Verjus. It's so easy to make that I never consider buying it - same with sauerkraut.

I do like Jody Maroni sausages, but I'm not sure whether they qualify as being hot dogs.

There is not ketchup in my house, but I have plenty of chili sauce, which is what I normally substitute for ketchup.

With sausages, I like sauerkraut, mustard (if I'm making a sandwich), grilled onions, grilled red (or orange) bell pepper, and, on occasion, chili to make a chili dog. I'm fine with just mustard and sauerkraut, however.

    I avoid baseball stadiums.

”Still haven’t had my fried clams yet. And those would be strips, not full belly”

The very best fried clams were those from Howard Johnsons. I’ve searched and have tried others, sigh. And yes with tartar sauce not cocktail sauce.

Maddie, i agree! Loved getting the fried clams at HoJo’s.

I liked their clams strips too, I also loved the HoJo's corn toastees.

@Sueb20 Now I need to go with DH to Matunuck Oyster Bar in Wakefield to have a fried clam (whole belly ☺️) roll or dinner this weekend.

Salonva, might you be thinking of the Roscoe Diner on Route 17, past Monticello, but not too far. Tons of college banners on the walls. That whole area was known as the Borscht Belt. It was on my way to and from college and we stopped there often in the early to mid 80's.

Too funny jo, I guess the banners on the wall was not so unique. I just googled kaplans monticello college banners.......and in the obituary for Anne Kaplan- lo and behold

"Anne Kaplan, a Monticello native .....married Moe Kaplan and together they started Kaplan's Restaurant on Broadway The walls of Kaplan's were lined with banners from hundreds of colleges and universities, each one garnering a salami for the person who brought it in.

    the obituary

Mayo? On a hot dog?!! That’s almost as bad as mayo on a burger. Don’t even.

I discovered Anne's obit several years ago; it made me sob then and still brings tears to me eyes. That bright red hair! She ran her restaurant with an iron fist, believe me. It was meticulously clean, the staff was well-trained, and the food was delicious. The deli room was where the meat slicers worked was casual.....that was where the college and university pennants were. There was also a bar and a more formal dining room with a full menu. Ooh, that room was a MCM dream, as I recall.

Irish!! Matunuck Oyster Bar is the best! We were there last week.

I love mayo on both hot dogs and burgers.

I stayed out of this conversation because when THIS is family, there isn't much to discuss ;-)

However since you all have now strayed into fried clam territory I will vote clam strips all the way baby! In college I worked as a bartender at Howard Johnson's (what a job!) with traveling salesmen regulars who would come in for 'happy hour' starting at about 2pm. When a car I recognized pulled into the lot, I'd open the trap door in the wall to the kitchen, order the clams and get the drink of choice for that regular. I made a lot of Manhattans, Martinis and the occasional Rob Roy in those days, each person having a specific recipe for their drink. It was an interesting time in the middle of Missouri and a huge lesson about somewhat desperate lives. I'd go home smelling like a combination or fryer grease and alcohol which was actually preferable to smelling like stale beer from working at a student bar. And the tips were far better.

Aoli is a good type of mayo on burgers

We get Sahlen hot dogs from Buffalo, but they are available at the minor league ball park here and in the local supermarkets. They are the natural casing weiners so if you’re going to have a hot dog, that is a good one to have. They grill excellent. We also use Weber’s horseradish mustard another Buffalo staple. It is available on A**Z** if you want to try some. But, yes, a Sahlen hot dog with Weber’s mustard is quite awesome. Now Ted’s hot dogs locally does put ketchup on them, so I wil have ketchup while DH will not, being from Chicago and all. We also use onion and relish.

    Weber’s Mustard

    last modified: 4 years ago

I agree that aioli is good on burgers, but I have also used bleu cheese salad dressing. If you have lettuce and tomato on a burger, then a salad dressing makes sense.

I have used horseradish mustard, and so I would like Weber's, I think. I've had horseradish mustard before, but I don't remember the brand - I think it was Grey Poupon or Boar's Head.

DH had a burger somewhere (Colorado maybe) with arugula, fig jam, and goat cheese and now he is convinced that this is the best topping for burgers.

DLM, that's family? Awesome! And I didn't know HoJo's had a bar. (Columbia?)

Yup bpath, founder and my dad were first cousins. There are 3 more generations in the family business now. Every trip home requires a stop. Don't know if every HoJo's had a bar but the one in Columbia did. Wish I had pics - it's just what you would imagine. Dark wood, faux black leather booths, dark carpet, smoky - I did like that job though!

The best hot dogs were served wth onions cooked in tomato sauce sold from hot dog trucks parked along the streets of the Bronx.

Love arugula on a burger. I may try that on my dog this weekend with the Bitchin' Sauce.

    Sueb, my hot dog sister!

We attended a picnic today and had a choice of a hamburger or hot dog. Guess what I chose? Yep, my once or twice a year hot dog! It was a big fat grilled dog hanging out each end of the bun and was delicious. I eat it with dijon mustard and pickle relish. I quit eating ketchup on anything long ago. DH loves them and loads them down with mustard, ketchup and chopped onions if available.

When I order my once a year burger at a restaurant (Coast Guard House Sueb)

I order the angus burger with carmelized onions & bleu cheese served on ciabatta bun. I very rarely eat red meat these days.

Turkey burgers or seafood are my go to meals.

Eld, I had no idea that Sabrett bottled the tomato sauce onions. I make my own from time to time.

Maybe this belongs on the cat thread. I was checking out the kitties on the Humane Society page

and this guy popped up. I am not getting another cat.

Irish, we haven’t been to the CGH in a few years, except for the deck. Are their burgers particularly good?

I am still sad about Turtle Soup. Their Cosmo Salad was my favorite thing. Sorry to veer away from the topic.

Mimou, Hotdog Bun is so adorable, I think he needs to go home with you. 😍

@Sueb20 I wouldn’t say they are the best by any means but I feel if I’m not up for ordering my salmon or shrimp I’ll order the burger knowing what it will taste like.

It’s all about location with the CGH!

^^ Reviewer on Open Table just wrote that “the angus burger was not the best for the price but overall we will return^^

SORRY TO VEER OFF TOPIC …
