Exterior remodel help

Hello! Hoping someone can help me figure out how to update the look of our house. We are going to change siding color and I’d love to add a small porch or possibly a gable somewhere to add some dimension, but I just can’t figure anything out. It’s just so boring! Thanks for any help!

You might be distressed to hear I love your house, minus the odd fence at the porch landing. I would remove that and then put more impressive shutters on the left 2 windows and more interesting entry lantern, and then bring in a landscaper. I think I would like low-ish spreading bushes and trees in the beds, like weeping cherries, or whatever will take all that hot sun.

First, pop those arch details out of the garage windows if they're removable. Then remove the shutters and the arched vent in the gable. If it is functional change to a rectangular one so you're repeating more of the modern elements on your home. Whatever you decide on the porch, the steps need to come out toward the street, and all your lanterns should be 1/3 of the front door's height. Upgrade the door from a builder's special to something with more glass and more of a modern vibe. Since the present gable on the left has such a low pitch and is so close to the front door, you may be better off to install a pergola rather than a gable over the new porch. It can extend all the way over the bay window and can be as deep as you want. Steps at the end of it by the garage will allow entry/exit from the drive when needed. The fence is a bit too colonial in style to me. Can you remove it? The landscaping seems a bit sparse; beef that up for a big impact on curb appeal. What color are you thinking for the siding? If replacing it, look into James Hardie pre-painted siding.

Some fresh garage doors would be the first place I'd start. I really love your plot, where are you located?

Great ideas above. Friends of mine recently resided their house using Hardie in Wedgewood Blue which is a beautiful medium blue. White houses are certainly popular right now, but I think your house would look better in a different color.

I thought of this similar house from an older houzz thread.

Your home is a nice simple design -- don't go adding things just to make it different, but do consider things that have purpose, and look like part of the design instead of an obvious addition.

Thanks for all your responses! New garage doors and removing the fence are definitely on the list. I didn’t know the lantern rule so I appreciate help on that! I also never thought about a pergola and I’m thinking that is probably our best bet.😄 For colors, we have a barn in the back yard and I’m loving the modern farmhouse look so was thinking white, black, and wood accents. We will work on the landscaping after the rest is complete.

Really great suggestions here. Definitely remove the shutters. They don’t fit with both the house and window styles.

I’d like to get rid of the bay window too. Feel like those are older looking too?
