I’m in z5 and they only act as a perennial here if they’re planted along the house (like in your photo) where they get a little more warmth and protection in the winter. You can also grow them as an annual from seed, or you can dig and overwinter the tubers indoors.

in my z5 MI ...they are annuals.. and reseed themselves rather easily.. IF there is enough snow cover that the larger birds that stay for winter.. dont eat all the fallen seed ..

plant then around the deck or porch. as the flowers open.. wait for it.. around 4 oclock.. they will fragrance the sitting area in the evening...

im not sure if they believe in day light saving time.. so that time might be off by an hour.. lol ..
