I would just add to GG’s advice that if you have snails in your garden, protect any new clematis shoots. Snails cannot resist them.

Thanks Gg. Just wondering why feed a plant with no foliage/growth. Floral, luckily no snails so far.

You supply nutrients because there are none to speak of in the potting media. Even roots need to access nutes despite how active photosynthesis may or may not be. And alfalfa meal or tea in particular stimulates basal stemming - always a good thing with clems!!

Clematis, probably more than anything else I grow, have a tendency to just sit and do nothing for months and then suddenly start growing. I think they have a tendency to focus on only root growth for extended periods of time.

for me.. the usual would be.. it will come alive in mid to late fall..and then i would get to worry whether it would go dormant properly ... and the worry about it all winter long .. lol ... ground freeze and all in my area ...

If it comes alive in fall I have no worries about winter. I can easily move the pot indoors for the winter if need be. Keeping fingers crossed.

No, don’t move it indoors. Put it somewhere cold but not so cold the soil will freeze. or, since they survived winter before you separated them, there’s no reason they wouldn’t survive after.

They definitely survive outdoors. I was responding to potential issues going dormant if it starts growing in fall. I don't have a cold garage or such so either it's outdoors on the balcony or indoors.

It would be better to leave it outside and lose any fresh growth than take it indoors. You could wrap the pot if necessary.

Ok, It's going to stay out whether or not it grows back this fall unless it's dead before then.
