Picture windows?

Building new house (replacing 1908 foursquare hit by lightning) and I don't think I want any picture windows, just large double hungs. People seem to think I'm crazy for wanting actual walls! But I like to hang artwork, and like the more historic feel of double hung (with grids). Is this a crazy design decision?

No, but it is crazy to listen to those voices that you think are coming from other people.

Depends on the style of your house. FWIW my 1920s apartment had a two huge picture windows (along with built in bookcases, buffet, and murphy bed) and I don't think that made it less historic.

I also don't really see how a picture window would change where you can hang artwork though...art on exterior walls between windows tends to look awkward IMO. If you want walls, put them on the interior of your house - then you will have huge spaces for art.

What is the style of the house?

Sorry for the loss of your foursquare.

If you're trying to replicate your foursquare style then it definitely is not crazy. Bay windows appeared on foursquares with some regularity if you want to introduce some variety. Also, I think you can take more liberties on the rear elevation.
