I do not recommend ceiling lights in the bedroom or living room. They do not give the proper atmosphere. Much better is a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height.

I have recessed lights in all of my bedrooms (on dimmers), actually in all of the rooms in my home including in reach in closets. The reason for so many lights is simple, Its a PITA and expensive to add them later when you're sorry you didnt do it in the first place and another reason is when I clean, I need light. I really just use my master O/L When im cleaning, same for the secondary B/Rs. We were stuck in a rental without any overhead lighting in the bedrooms, and they were dark even with lamps, dreary and dim. Hated every second of cleaning those rooms, a lot of dark corners. I value being able to see when Im cleaning. You will never be sorry that you have a lot of lighting (and outlets) but you will surely be sorry if you dont. Your lighting should be layered, I wouldnt use the O/L as my primary source of lighting . Lamps and windows are also needed.

For bedrooms, I never place recessed lighting in each corner or a grid (the default locations for DIYers + having a central ceiling fan). That just causes too many conflicts with funiture layouts, circulation, functions, and often doesn't lead to a "consistent" ambient level. Instead, I accent something, like windows, or bays, or a headboard wall. Then it is layered lighting with table lamps but still serves a purpose without the other layers on.
