O I was told it is a Japanese holly but when I look up Japanese holly some places say flowering and another said produces black berries in winter but I have never seen this on mine. I have 4 of them about 4 1/2 feet tall but that is when it's cut to shape.

If it produces berries, it has to flower :-) But like all hollies, there are both male and female plants and you need at least one of each for berries to form.

Ok , I am just looking g to get the same bush but not sure what I'm looking for. I see ones called compact Japanese holly but not sure if it's whT I have.

that is a plant that has way to much potential for where it is planted.. causing the need to be sheared once or twice a year... the beat it back into some sort of submission ...

frankly. i would take the short flower season mess of a rhodie.. before i would sign myself up for a lifetime of shearing.. my life or the plants ... of those rather drab green ugly bushes.. i wont even honor them by calling them a shrub.. just bushes ...

Well Ken that is your opinion. I think I'd rather shear one of those back twice a year than cutting back a rhododendron because it keeps growing over my walkway not to mention sweeping up leaves or should I say trying to sweep up leaves which is almost impossible on a sidewalk unless I wait until they turn brown and curl. And that is all year around. If it's not flowers dropping its leaves dropping winter ,spring,summer and fall. All for a few weeks of flowers,I don't think so. Thank you Jordan for the answer I needed.

Yes! When I moved in I really liked it in bloom but that didn't last long. It was planted in a bed between house a d sidewalk to steps and it gets to the point t you brush by it unless I cut it back. And like you said blah most of the time.

Mine is pretty big about 6 x5 . Can they be cut back hard? Yours looks nice.

Maybe I'll give it a try. If I can prune it back so that and debris falls in the bed I'd be OK with that. Those leave are a pain to get up on sidewalk. Thanks for the help!
