Analysis paralysis: bed edition

last modified: 4 years ago

I am thisclose to pulling the trigger on this bed. I’ve been shopping for a new bed for probably two years and always find something wrong with all of them. Too platformy, too glitzy, too chintzy, poor quality, trying too hard . . . this the first one that really speaks to me, and I can’t find any reason to reject it, other than price. But it’s on sale now, which alleviates the $$ concerns a bit. Now I just have to choose between fabric and leather. There’s only one option for each, which is helpful. The leather would probably be more durable (I intend to draft instructions to be buried in this bed), but the fabric is speaking to me a bit more. The fabric I think softens it a bit, makes it a bit more feminine, and is a more correct reference to the MCM era.

Stickley Walnut Grove bed

**Also very important to note that my grandpa . . .

. . . was a member of Walnut Grove Country Club in Dayton, Ohio. Accordingly, there is a not insignificant degree of kismet at work here. The sale ends tomorrow, so any and all advice, gut instincts or chastisements are invited. Fabric on top, leather on bottom.

I too like the fabric a bit better, but really just wanted to say that we have a number of pieces of Stickley furniture, and they're beautifully made and will indeed last a lifetime.

Your grandpa looks like a movie star!

Beautiful bed but I would not personally be responsible enough to own it in material. I would do leather.

Gorgeous bed - love the details. I vote fabric although I would worry about it getting discolored/dirty but the leather doesn't have the same appeal. And what a handsome Grandpa! (my sister-in-law was from a little town near Dayton - West Milton)

Your grandfather was incredibly handsome. I will be the odd duck and choose the leather over the fabric.

That bed is gorgeous! I have a fabric bed, very well-made and it has been just fine.

For my son-just graduated hs-I just bought him a bed platform bed, in leather, I don't trust him with fabric.

I'd go for the fabric. It's attractive and more versatile for redecorating in the future.

    Good looking gramps.

My bed has a fabric headboard and it looks like new. Its at least 12 years old. I vote fabric, leather is too masculine.

I forgot I had a picture on my phone -- bed in fabric and the bench in leather. I'm definitely feeling the fabric more. It's much more sophisticated. I'll make sure the fabric is treated and vow to not eat spaghetti in bed.

And thanks, my grandpa was indeed a handsome man. Always with a twinkle in his eye and a cleft chin just like Cary Grant!

Fabric. If you have a cat don't get leather.

Definitely get that bed! The fabric looks luxurious. We’ve had one for several years now and it looks same as it did the day we bought it. Your grandpa is so handsome!

As an extremely satisfied owner of a number of Stickley pieces, I know you cannot go wrong with either the fabric or the leather option. Get the one that makes your heart swoon a little bit more, and never look back. This is a gorgeous bed!

I much prefer the fabric over the leather - and when I clicked on your link it also mentioned that the fabric is Crypton for protection.

Love the bed -- and it is so perfect for your home and style! I also prefer the fabric finish.

And aside, I had a similar kismet experience when I purchased an antique iron bed (with custom finish). I had soooo many beds to choose from-- finds from across the country. The one I chose came from a foundry in western PA in a town where my grandparents grew up. That was my sign that it was the right choice!

Your grandfather was a handsome man--- I can imagine he'd always have a twinkle in his eye!

How will you dress it? Any sort of coverlet/spread will cover the gorgeous legs and foot board. I couldn't do it--but could I live with the tucked in view the pictures have????

Team fabric. I am just not a fan of leather furniture.

Looks gorgeous to me! I'd vote pull the trigger. Whenever I've hesitated after seeing a furniture item I've been wanting on sale, I have really regretted it. I'm currently mourning a perfect coffee table that was pulled off the market after I hestitated when it was on sale. Back to your bed, I like the fabric in the photos best.

Well, inquiring minds want to know!! Did you buy it????

I really like the look of the fabric bed with the leather bench. I love the look of a few leather pieces of furniture mixed in.

I bought it! In fabric. I paid half down and it’s supposed to arrive in 8-12 weeks. I haven’t had any of those large purchase regret pangs, so it seems it was the right thing to do. Thank you all for the input, encouragement and grandpa love. I can’t wait!

@arcy_gw, I usually just have a cotton blanket on my bed. In the winter I add a second blanket that stays folded at the foot of the bed during the day. The cotton one doesn’t hang down too far. I’m going to try the new bed with the shortie box spring I have on my current bed and see if that gives enough height to expose some of the bed. My blanket is fairly rustic, bought for the current bed, which is a dark brown, faux-suede, nailhead affair that was perfect in Santa Fe. So, I may need to do something different formthe bedding, anyway.

@DLM2000_GW, my grandparents lived— and my parents grew up — in Vandalia, Ohio. It’s a small, small world.

    Beautiful bed.

I've been tucking linens for 17yrs now. The sides get tucked between bed and boxspring with the end of bed underneath mattress. Our mattress is extremely heavy too.

It's a beautiful bed and I agree you can live with it quite nicely now and ruminate about what changes you'd make if any.

I tuck between the mattress and the side rails on my bed, which is easier and faster than tucking under the mattress. Not sure if you have that option as your bed/mattress seems much tighter to the side rail than my bed.

Thanks, all. I’m propped up in said bed typing this very response and I haven’t had one ounce of buyer’s remorse. I’m hoping this is the last bed I’ll ever buy.

@Sueb20, it’s a little painting. The artist is Alice Hammell, out of Oxford, Mississippi. I bought it at an art festival in my early twenties, when the tiny size made it at least borderline affordable. I thought I was really something, having just bought Real Art created by a By God Real Artist. I still adore the painting, which is why it has a special spot by the bed.
