DIG IT UP IMMEDIATE,Y ... pot it in a good potting MEDIA.. place in full bright shade..

ps: this time of year.. is a great time to solarize soil for future garden beds .. that is when you cover a space with plastic.. and let the sun destroy everything under the plastic... including small trees.. so.... uhmmmm no plastic if survival is the goal ...

No, it wasn't just a cutting, it had roots (about the size of a softball I guess for the ~2 foot branch) and it was already in really loose rooting media. And I put 3" plain non dyed hardwood mulch around it.

I figured a plastic bag over it would be like a greenhouse , it's a white bag so that makes less heat than a black one.

White, clear, black....it doesn't matter. No to the plastic bag. If anything, prop something temporary next to it to provide some shade during the brightest part of the day. Don't cover and seal it in.

The only time I have used plastic (not black) is for an expected frost and that is only temporary.
