Bathtub or Shower

last modified: 4 years ago

I have a small 2 bed 1 bath home (900 sf) . I am thinking of going from bathtub to shower. I am not planning on selling anytime soon and certainty don't think of my small home as a family home. Do you think I should keep my bathtub shower combo or go for just a shower?

Depends on your location and neighborhood. is your neighborhood mostly singles, no children, seniors. or is it a starter home, do most in the neighborhood have tubs, are many rentals for families, etc. many would say people will renovate a bathroom to get what they want but for a starter home and when you have children you are typically strapped for cash. i would not have bought my first home if it didnt have a tub because i would not have been able to afford to renovate it. i would take into account all these factors and look at sold real estate listings in your neighborhood and see how many have a tub and let that guide you.

I live in PP and it's mix of family and singles. My house is small so I would not think of it as a starter home for a family. I am a single person, so it is perfect for me.

Agreed that it depends hugely on where you live. If you're on the coasts in an urban area, plenty of families might live in a 900 sf home. If you're in a surburban area where larger homes are affordable to most families, you're far less likely to have children living there and it may be less of an issue for resale. You could also look around your immediate neighborhood to see which other houses are like yours and who lives there. That said, if you don't plan to sell the house in the next 20 years, then I wouldn't worry about it one way or the other--just do what you like and assume a future owner will renovate to their own needs.

I always think a home should have a tub, even for adults. There will inevitably be a time some body part will need soaking ;)

You can have the shower head installed above your bathtub, this will be essential if you have a small bathroom and will work perfectly for everyone’s needs.

However, there is another option of having both a shower and a bathtub in one bathroom, without having to have the shower head above the bathtub, and that’s by having a HUGE shower ‘room’ with the bathtub inside the shower.

Sounds crazy, we know, but it’s actually quite genius. Have the bigger half of your bathroom closed off with a large and clear glass wall (including a door) and have the shower on one side of the space and the bathtub on the other side of the space. We love this idea way more than having a separate shower and bathtub in a big bathroom, as the ‘wet room’ styled shower and bathtub is so much easier to keep clean and also a ton of fun for the kids and the whole family really.
