Boring, plain dining room, need help!

We moved into our home a few years ago and I'm still stumped over how to decorate our dining room. I want to breathe some life into it and make it look more decorated but I have no idea how. It just looks super boring right now and plain. I have a bit of a tropical motif going on, I've added a picture of my foyer to get an idea. I would like to put a buffet under the mirror but there isn't much room and it would make our already fairly small living room even smaller. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to make this a nicer space. Thanks for your help!

Jo

The table is just too large for your space. Maybe some rearranging of the entire area is needed. How many eat meals at this table daily? We need to see all the walls and furniture to help you optimize your home and furnishings. Here are some guidelines on how to get the max from your post.

In this configuration, there's not much you can do. You could replace the mirror with art, add a more interesting window treatment, replace the drum pendant with a more decorative fixture, put a larger bowl or tray on the table with some colorful fruit (real or fake).

Can you show us pictures of the whole space, or better, a drawing of the space showing full dimensions of the room (including doorway and window dimensions) and dimensions of the furniture? What that dining space really needs is for the sofa to move away from it. It's so crowded there right now that you don't even have the table lined up properly with the light fixture. With a little more information, so of the great Houzz people can probably give you a better furniture arrangement for the space.

Looks to me, from your pictures that the lighting over the table is not centered. I personally would take down the mirror. This is where you can give your space some pop. Replace mirror with art.

I agree with above, if you post the dimensions of the room, there may be a better layout for you and your family.

If at all possible, can couch be moved to face TV or go under front window? No matter what you do to dining room, with present layout, it won’t have a big impact.

If you have to leave couch there, consider a l-shaped bench (great for storage also), art, and switch to a semi flush light.

Add drapery panels to the window with a fun, colorful fabric. Put a rug down under the table to define the dining area. And put up either a gallery wall or a large piece of art instead of the mirror. Maybe also get a more interesting chandelier?

Thanks so much for the advice given so far, lots of really good suggestions. And thanks for providing the advice for first time posters. I've taken a some new pictures and have also uploaded the dimensions of the room.

The reason we have such a large table is because our families are very large and in fact we have to put in two leafs in to accomodate everyone when we have a big dinner. And also, whoever mentioned it wasn't centered, yes you're completely right, lol We actually pushed the table further into the dining room to give us some more room in the living room as I'm home every day with our 2.5 year old and needed more room to play.

We don't have tons of money to purchase new furniture or any really large items, I'm looking at smaller, less expensive ways of enhancing the room. But some of these bigger scale items I'll definitely keep in mind for the future.

    @Maureen

The front window is very large and low so a couch would block a lot of the light.

The bench seating is super cute!! I love it.

Try this: take away two chairs and push the table up against back of sofa (try to line it up with the pendant). Put another chair at the end and three chairs on mirror side.

Take the mirror down and hang it long in the front hall.

Get another piece of art to go with the hall art and hang them where the mirror was.

How many max do you need to seat? Have you considered a drop leaf table that can open for company dinners? You could even rent chairs if those dinner parties only happen a few times a year. You can keep one leaf up for your family dining, and then open it completely for company. You could even move the sofa against the dining room wall and pull the table out into the living area for big dinners. Place it behind a sofa to save space.
