I was thinking of some sort of shade and then eventually floor to ceiling curtains-unfortunately the curtains would be just for show since I have too little of a space between wall and window

IMO you need solar shades to control heat and UV rays and since those windows ar so high motorized ones would be my choice and then if you have to you use panels but remember they can't be next to the FP For sure not woven wood in that space ever .
