Hello - i’m purchasing a new home and want to upgrade the kitchen. definitely want to replace the granite with white quartzite - as well as the pendants - but am struggling with the woodwork. what color do i paint the cabinets and built in? id also like to paint the door frame too. i like the look of black for doorframe and maybe built in. ive always loved the look of charcoal grey or deep blue but husband thinks we should go light on the cabinets to brighten up the kitchen. any suggesstions welcome! thanks

Congratulations on your new home. I wouldn't paint those cabinets unless they're in poor condition -- they look expensive and beautiful on my computer screen. Instead, as recommended above, I'd replace the countertops, backsplash and lighting.

Keep those pretty cabinets as is. Though I'd rethink the wedge island and the pendants.

@P Banos - if the OP tries to redo the island shape, she opens a can of worms with the flooring (or lack thereof) underneath it, as well as potential electrical wiring re-do to the island. Consequently I do not advise re-shaping the island.

You're jumping the gun here! In a new to you home there may be other issues to deal with before cosmetics; function first, form later. The cabs look great! Live here and see how it functions for you. If there are no problems with the layout, just do new counters and backsplash and new wall paint. You might consider less bulky stools for the island. Go ahead now and upgrade the lights, adding LEDs under the cabinets and in the bookcase/wine storage unit. They'll really be helpful when you start looking for the new countertop/splash material. Change the ceiling ones to LEDs too and go pretty bright; maybe 3500K (do your research.)

Thanks again for the advice. I’m definitely getting over eager and can see that I need to live in the place before jumping straight to what i envision as my ”ideal kitchen”. Good point re: what I may be getting into with electrical issues. this is an old house and not sure i want to mess with wiring unless necessary!

Beautiful cabinets! Leave them alone. Natural woods are making a return to the kitchen. It appears that your island has no plumbing to it. And, perhaps only one outlet (on the other side). You have real hardwood floors, so if you make any changes to the island it can probably be patched. I would focus on counters/backsplash. Lighting. And then….if you want to make some changes…a new, rectangular or square island. Possibly painted, if that is what you want. Make the changes there. A different color. Adding a small sink. Changing the style of cabinetry (or repurposing what you have.). Minor modifications to your kitchen will make a huge change.

Frankly, it’s a beautiful kitchen as is. I would install under cabinet LED lights, install new lights over the island (if current ones not your style), and replace the island chairs, and then live with it for a while. The granite is pretty and reflective. When well lit, it will shine. That said, replacing the granite counter and backsplash with something lighter will certainly brighten the kitchen.

IMO the fastest and cheapest way to brighten any space is the lighting so start just by changing the light bulbs to LEDs 4000K I do not love wood but I do agree those cabinets look quite nice and there is no way you should be thinking DIY paint job for sure so understand a new to you space is always best waiting to see how it functions before spending much money. New counters will not improve function .So wait until you have been in there at least 3-6 months before doing anything drastic
