Trance is also blooming here. Thistles and Thorns never has any thorns here. Aunt Patsy is a bright one. Parent Royal Extravaganza does well here, but I am reluctant to add Pierces.

Zuzu's Treasure is looking good. It's always good to see that rebloom, isn't it. Trance is blooming here but it's shorter than normal. We have quite a few like that this season.

We are having a thunderstorm right now--not much rain though. Our temperatures are supposed to cool off down to the mid to low 80's for about a week. Maybe I can hit some of the late bloomers with pollen.

I always like Trance, Black Panther looks good. Mine just finished blooming. Nice for Zuzu's Treasure to be reblooming, not just a pretty face!

Nan and Mantis - Does Trance bloom midseason for you, as registered, or does it bloom late like mine. Trance is shorter than usual here too. I don't know if it's because of the lack of rain in May and June or the fact that it gets more shade now. Until a couple of years ago it was very well budded every year. I need to move it out of the shade now.

Mantis and Nat - I like the color of Thistles and Thorns and think it likely will have teeth here in my heat. I wonder why Nat's has teeth and yours does not, Mantis. Have you two had it long?

Maryl and Nat - Lightning Round does look pretty white when it's very hot, and it's always frilly. When it's cooler (nights in the 60s), you can see the pink undertones. The bloom seems larger than the registered 7 inches. While it's such a beauty, it's an absolute dud for hybridizing here. It's pollen doesn't work - even on cultivars that set pods with all other pollens. I could not get it set a pod when temps were cooler, and the only reason I bought it was to use in hybridizing. But it's so pretty, I don't think I could stand to part with it. Lightning Round was my husband's favorite bloom last year and this year.

Maryl and Mantis - I was surprised by how bright a red Aunt Patsy is. Pierce's photo of it seems to have brown towns, but mine has never looked like that. It's showing much less edge and watermark now than it had earlier.

Had to come back and look at Aunt Patsy again. What color is the edge for you and how colorfast/sunfast is it? The problem with many of the dark colors with yellow centers is that the centers often bleach out and it's the bright yellow center that is part of the initial attraction. You, being such a red fan, do you like it?..........Maryl

I love seeing all of the rebloom, Lightning Round is a favorite today. It seems Trance is blooming late for all of us, mine has buds but will be awhile before I see blooms.

What a nice surprise to have Thistles and Thorns. bloom unexpectedly and be so pretty. I always liked Black Panther...The dark ones always appeal to me. Aunt Patsy is a lovely shade of red. Zuzu's Treasure has is pale but very pretty and the August Cherry trio is appealing/

I have had some tiny teeth on T and T, but it is a short plant.

Maryl - Pierce says the edge on Aunt Patsy is orange and gold. I have seen the edge look pink, or gold, or orange or cream on different days. Edge color seems to vary with the temperatures in my garden. The photo posted above is how it looked about 11 a.m. after a string of 98-degree days and no watering. When cooler and well-hydrated, the throat is more green than yellow. Here are a couple of other photos of it:

It is NOT sunfast. The blooms go limp and faded in the afternoon heat when temps are above 92 degrees. The extremely sunfast red Pierce that I have is Such A Blaze. It's sunfast up to 100 degrees with a heat index of 112. I was amazed by it this season.

Such A Blaze

I like both them, and they are both semi-evergreen. This is my second year for Such A Blaze. It has overwintered and multiplied well (started with 2 fans and is 6 fans now), but it has not rebloomed so far. Aunt Patsy was acquired this Spring as a single fan, which quickly added a second fan. It has rebloomed well on both fans. Aunt Patsy's flower is an enormous 7.5 inches, while Such A Blaze is in the 6-inch range. Aunt Patsy's scapes are a few inches taller than Such A Blaze's. They are both very pretty reds.

Mantis - At least you had some teeth on Thistles and Thorns, even if they were tiny. My scape is only about 8 inches. Do you have any photos of your Thistles and Thorns. I'd love to see how it looked in your garden.

Thank you Debra for taking the time to answer my questions. Such a Blaze is a pretty one, but there's something about Aunt Patsy that makes it look brighter; but if it's not colorfast/sunfast it's not for me. I do give daylilies some leeway when our temperatures are as high as this year (107 today), but we are consistently in the mid to high 90's every year during the summer months, so they have to be able to take that at the very least..............Maryl

Maryl - I would say Aunt Patsy and Such A Blaze are equally bright. My pics of Such A Blaze are taken early in the morning in shade or partial shade. Aunt Patsy in this post was taken in the bright, blazing, midday sun. It's reflecting the sunlight, which makes it look super bright, while my photos of Such A Blaze are not. This was the most teeth I had on Thistles and Thorns. I had a pic from this year, but scapes here were also very short. It doesn't like it here. Color this year was more washed out (I deleted the pic). When I first got it, I thought Northern Lights had sent the wrong plant. But I suppose it is a hybridizer's plant.

Some of Karol's plants actually do better in a lower zone number. I've had people from northern OH (quite a bit colder) rave about plants that don't do very well here. It's all about consistent cold and snow cover.

Mantis - Thanks for posting your photo! It looks more like one I used to grow several years ago called Spacecoast Sharp Tooth. It was a short one with blooms just above the foliage. I got my plant from Petal Pusher, and it seems to have more blue tones to it than yours. Northern Lights has been known to send the wrong plant. They sent me some tall toothy thing for Lee's Loss. It is definitely NOT Lee's Loss.

Thanks, Debra, for letting me know. I am almost certain now that Grossman sent the wrong plant. I complained and sent a picture, but he insisted that it would develop teeth later and that it was correct.
