Beverly as a hedge

Would Beverly work as a hedge? Does it behave more like a shrub than a hybrid tea? This is for the front of my house

Is it as black spot resistant as advertised?

Just my opinion, but my Beverly got nice and wide and seem like it would make a decent hedge plus mine bloomed a lot.

Thanks Kristine, does it bloom in flushes or spring flush and then sporadic? Do you have any trouble with blackspot? I am guessing where you are is as humid as where I am, albeit with cooler summers.

No we have blazing hot summer and very low humidity .

    I didn't have BS

She bloomed in flushes but took very short breaks in between

I live in South Florida where it is hot and humid. I have Beverly and I do not notice that is BS magnet.... I do have some of those, but Beverly is not one of them.... The only problem that I have with her is that the chili thrips love her. She is the one I have to watch the most, she gets them before anyone else.... She will get regular thrips too, but it is the chili thrips that seem to lover her..... if you get colder winters they will die off..... or if CT's are not prevalent in your area you will be ok.

On your other questions, mine does bloom all summer even though I do not try to make her bloom in the summer because of CTs.

Her bush shape is more like David Austin bushes than the regular HT shape. In fact, I planted her in my DA section of the garden instead of my HT garden

As for putting her as a hedge, I do not plant close enough to know because of BS...... but as I stated before she doesn't seem to get BS.... or at least not bad here in my area.

My Beverly is on fortuniana root stock.

    Hope this helps you out

    Sharon

Do you live in Columbus or near Columbus? They have this rose at the Columbus park of roses that you could possibly check out. I think they have quite a few of them. I'll take a look at my map....

My Beverly is a huge bush that keeps throwing out octopus canes , wouldn't work as a hedge for me.

    Thank you all.

Moses, I had White Out in the spot I am looking to grow a hedge. Had rust and black spot for me but was a prolific bloomer. Also I did not like the brown colored blooms after it was spent.

I tried another Knock Out- the blush colored one although I generally detest them. Not much of a bloomer and also got black spot but we did have a wet spring and summer. I ended up having to spray so the front garden would not look a mess.

I considered the Flower carpet rose which has been disease free for me in another spot but for some reason I cannot find the color of my choice ( the apple blossom pink) and Monrovia will not ship to my area.

I think I will try Beverly if she is shrub like. I can shape it to a hedge if needed by taming octopus arms. I have had good success with Belinda's Dream without any spraying ( unbelievable that Knock Outs got blackspot but a hybrid tea did not), but Belinda's Dream has the typical gawky hybrid tea shape at least for me.

Ironically all my David Austin roses are doing very well. My Harkness climber Compassion had blackspot for the first time this year.

Thank you all for your input.

Vaporvac, I am in SW Ohio close to Cincinnati ( same as you perhaps?). Challenging rose growing conditions. Clay soil so I always have to dig big holes and amend the soil and humid hot summers. It's been unusually wet this summer.

Winters have not been as cold as in past years so I cannot remember the last time I had any significant die-back of canes, even my climbers.

This is the first year that I have ever sprayed the roses with fungicide and I did it with a heavy heart. I grow organically and feed the soil with tons of organic matter/humus and invite the birds to take care of the pests. I treasure my sparrows who eat all the JB and sundry spider mites.
