Sounds painful. Hope you are feeling better soon. I don't have any knowledge of India's plants, but a search brought up Canthium coromandelicum, which looks similar. Just throwing it out there since no one else has posted an id yet.

Reviving this old thread to admit that I mistakenly blamed the wrong tree for my injury. The

locals who were with me when my accident happened tell me that it was actually this equally spined tree that was the culprit. A somewhat rare tree even here, with great religious and medical significance, it is Aegle marmelos, common name Bael tree.
