Drop ceiling hell

My daughters condo kitchen in Austin is about to be gutted and new cabinets/appliances will replace this 1968 nightmare. What about this existing drop ceiling?? Cabinets are mod white glossy. What would yall do with this ceiling?? Florescent lights must go!!!

If she must keep the drop ceiling, it might be interesting to look into LED lights that mimic windows or sky lights. I've never used these myself, but they seem intriguing. Example

What is above the drop ceiling? If it is mechanicals that need to be accessed, you may not be able to do anything...

If you need to keep things hidden do drywall and add cans. If you can take it all the way finish it and use the tallest uppers you can.

Looks like it's just electrical up there, right? you should be able to install . recessed lights and put in a ceiling that is not as low as the drop ceiling was, but you should have a professional electrician assess it to keep to code. Raising the ceiling will affect the height of cabinets. Good Luck!
