Bathroom Reno Help please

So we are having to redo our bathroom because of water damage and mold which sucks. Contractors are here now and I have to decide on the subway tiles by this weekend. I’m struggling with if I should use subway tiles at again and I’m wanting to go up to the ceiling with them. Here is my restroom how it use to look and how it looks now and some of the new materials I bought. The marble will accent the shower floor and niche. I’m also adding in a pony way to the shower. Pic of example pony wall attached.

You're asking if you should install subway tile in the shower?

I’m struggling with if I should use subway tiles like it was originally or do something different for the shower area. I have a bare bathroom now and this is what I decided on so far are the floor tiles and the shower floor tile/niche

If you like subway tiles they will be fine. However, you have a lot of different whites going on already - varying from warm to cool. So be careful of the color you choose!

Hi Sammie thank you for the advice. I’m not a huge fan of subway I was just going to play it safe and get another white. But I really want something in the shower that will bring out what I already picked here. I just don’t know what to choose and need some help.

A soft grey would be nice ... not sure that is enough of a change for you, tho. Bring color in with textiles (rugs, towels, etc.) and paint Are you going with the same type of vanity? Consider using separate mirrors over each sink. You have a lot going on in the room-adding another "focal point" in the shower area isn't necessary.

With that flower-look tile, definitely no to subways in the shower. The flower-look tile and the subways are both smallish patterns and too close in size. You need contrast -- the floor tile you've already chosen (mounted "tall" instead of "wide") would work great in the shower with that flooring. They'd also have less grout than subway and would be easier to keep clean.

What kind of grout are you thinking of using? Light or dark? This matters just as much as the tile.

As for the niche, with a pony wall in the mix, I'd skip the niche and go with large shelves IN the pony wall. This'd keep your toiletries hidden from view. Consider that a pretty tile placed in a niche ends up being covered by shampoo bottles.

Where are you hanging towels for the shower?

However, you have a lot of different whites going on already - varying from warm to cool. So be careful of the color you choose!

Yes, be sure to look at all your whites together. They can clash.

But I really want something in the shower that will bring out what I already picked here. I just don’t know what to choose and need some help.

Yeah, subway won't do that. Too close in pattern.

But I really want something in the shower that will bring out what I already picked here.

How about bringing the flower-tile up one wall as an accent? Consider that it'll be more work to keep clean.

I think you're afraid of things being "too plain". Stop that worry. Once you add in linens, artwork on the walls and accessories, it won't be. Your greater danger is building in "too much" pattern, and you won't be able to undo that. Well, not easily or cheaply.

Consider using separate mirrors over each sink.

Disagree. You already have lots going on here. Separate mirrors add more lines, can get to be too much quickly. Instead, one large mirror will reflect more light, make the room look larger, and gives you a better view of yourself and your outfit as you're getting ready. Get a nice mirror, frame it -- but no separate mirrors. They're less functional in numerous ways.

You have a lot going on in the room-adding another "focal point" in the shower area isn't necessary.

    Agree.

I like bathroom floors ans shower walls in the same 12 x24 porcelain tile not too many different choices in a bathroom are always IMO better . BTW shower niches are in my expereince often the cause for leaks so I try hard to avoind them when possible and I have no idea why you want to high light shampoo bottles ever .

Oh you all are just wonderful!!!! I love your advice and greatly appreciate it. So this is what I have taken from you all advice. 1. Use the same floor tile for the shower and surrounding area wall but in a tall pattern 2. Don’t add a niche 3. Add storage in the pony wall instead 4. Bring in color with textiles and rugs instead.
Another question where should I use the flower marble besides the shower floor because I love it and want to use it somewhere in the restroom. And 2 for the tiles I using for the bathroom floor they are in matte should I get polished ones for the shower wall and surrounding area?

I'd use the flower tile as backsplash for your vanity. Then you get to enjoy it whenever you're standing at the sink.

Strike that. I just re-looked at your vanity. And the vessel sinks would cover up the pretty tile.

Yep I thought about that too lol

Is there any kind of way that you can use it near the bathtub?

Having the contractor add a few on the floor with your other tile?

I thought about using it where the niche was just accenting it there or on the wall where the tub fixtures are pic below

If you put tile on the window dividers (a nice place for the flower tile) I'd do it all the way up. It will be a cleaner look.

So put the marble all the way up on these two and not the shower wall

I think so. I might even do the side walls of the window niche too. What will cover the bottom of the window niche? More vanity countertop? Or more of the floor tile?

If you do the verticals in the window with the flower tile, then you could do a similar width vertical stripe of flower tile on the back shower wall. It will look rhythmic and intentional.

I want to find the vanity quartz counter to put on that window sill. But if I can’t find it I was going to just buy the floor tile on there.

Possibly create a framed “rug” insert of the floral marble tile in the center of your bathroom floor? I wouldn’t place it on the floor of your shower. (I am not a fan of marble on the floor of a shower.). Instead, a small, simple format white tile that will match your larger wall tile. Then, feature a large strip of the beautiful tile on the wall of your shower, framed. Just a suggestion.

Thank you Ptreckel I do love the idea of doing the framed look on the shower wall. Looks like I have to go back to the store to find another tile for the shower floor. Redoing a bathroom is a lot of work and is frustrating.

I would skip the marble on the floor and find a simple mosaic ( there probably is one to match the floor tile you have ) . Then do a large stripe or rectangle feature on the faucet wall of the shower with the pretty marble. Do the niche the same as the walls ( or since you are doing a pony wall, move the niche to there ). I would have the walls the same as the floor so you're not fighting whites. That tile is too pretty to be on a shower floor or in a niche behind shampoo bottles - feature it!

Debbi should I have the shower walls in the shiny/gloss finish or keep it matte like the floors?

  • PRO

You can do either - I have many customers do the shiny on the walls and matte on the floor. This is a picture a customer sent me - same tile - wall is polished and floor is matte. In their lighting it is hard to tell:

Go with the one that looks the best with the marble deco tile.

Thank you tremendously you all!!!! I will post pictures when it’s done. They told us 2 weeks but I think it maybe 3 weeks because they have to use something to take the moisture out and that’s 3 days to do that.
