What ever it is, it will have to come out, as it is growing right at the base of a Hamamelis mollis whip, which was planted only about 6 months ago.

It can stay there, for now, but once I have a definate ID it will be moved to a new location or to the great flower garden in the sky.

That's an interesting suggestion, as I found a plant of R. luteola in the "lawn" when I bought the property last year, and another has popped up this year.

The plant I'm after an ID for is massive compared to the one in the grass, but that could be because it is in a bed composed, primarily, of compost and potting compost.

I'll check out the leaves tomorrow and see how the veination compares.

I believe it is R. luteola.

The veination on the leaves of both are the same.

A second forum also ID'd it as R. luteola.
