The potential moisture source is the air. Have you ever seen the mist rising from the mountains in the morning? That is your moisture source.

I imagine the wall construction in a 60 year old cabin is not up to current air sealing standards in construction; I doubt plastic on the crawl floor will do any noticeable good. This is the old version of open-concept living. ;)

We have a cabin on a slab in the Smokey Mountains and have to run a dehumidifier and ceiling fan 24/7 to keep the moisture an subsequent mildew away.

Which way did the foam insulation face?

Our moisture problem (Maine woods) is the air holds more moisture in the warm days and then condenses on cold walls in the evening. This is particularly true when we are not there to heat the cabin. We run dehumidifiers when we aren't there.

That said, someone suggested a mini-split which would heat, cool and dehumidify to replace our baseboard heaters and lack of A/C.

Thanks all. Although older, the cabin was redone by the prior owner and wall, roof and floor have been insulated. A recent home inspector said to leave the crawl space alone as it is "breathing" well enough as it is now, ie: open on three sides. Others in the area say, as do some here, that moisture is a warmer weather issue. A mini-split was also suggested by the inspector as a way to condition the space more reliably year round. Its a thought, but in some respects, its a nod to "modern" times when the cabin and its original open space concept, fireplace and knotty pine evoke a less complicated time if convenience is not a concern. It’s surprising how humid some mountain locations can get. If the area gets a lot of rain, it’s sometimes humid much of the year.
