should I remove shutters?

We are getting our house painted and are wondering if we should remove the shutters. I’m not sure if shutters have any functionality or are they completely aesthetic? Do they make the house look dated?
The house will be painted a medium to dark grey with black accents so shutters would be painted black if we kept them
