Hollyhock questions

I know I am on the wrong side of the bigpond for most posters experience, but here goes.

Location: West Cornwall, UK

I planted some hollyhock seed directly into the ground in April.

Half of them are a bit smaller than I expected for first year, but the growing season is far from over. The other half have grown to about 4' and have been flowering for the past couple of weeks.

As biennials/short lived perennials why would they decide to cram 2 years growth into <6 months?

Anyone else had this happen?

No idea why they would behave like that but once you have them, you’ll have them forever, providing you let them go to seed. They are probably the healthiest crop on my allotment and I never sowed a single one.... You never know what colours

will turn up and 4 ft would be a dwarf here. 😉

Beautiful, floral.

I love them and mine are in a small area with foxglove. Battle Royal.

They look remarkably free of rust, Floral. Are they the fig-leaved variety? I only grow althea cannabina these days (take your point about the persistence of mallows)

Some of them have fig-like leaves but since every single one is self sown I have no idea what their parentage is. They do get rust but it doesn't seem to bother them.
