Usually happens after tomatoes get LOTS of water following not getting much water. The insides suck up water and the skin (which grows slower) hasn't grown enough to be ready for it.

Sounds reasonable. We had a hot, dry summer, then in early August had several downpours a few days apart.

It's always worst on the reddest fruits, IMPE. Less ripe fruits have a chance to scar over as they grow. Whenever we're expecting a lot of rain, I pick the reddening tomatoes or else they will split.

I guess I picked the wrong year to become a novice gardener. My delicata and carnival squash plant leaves turned yellow, then brown and shriveled up last week. I'm in the Hudson Valley of upstate NY.

When an easterner complains about pepo squash dying, and things were being watered well, one might suspect vine borers. If individual vines started dying, that's what likely happened. Up north, vine borers won't hit until mid-summer. August is maybe a bit late for them in your area. That's not about the wrong year. It's about the wrong place. If they did bad stuff to you this year, they'll likely be back next year. There are strategies for avoiding vine borers, and it's talked about a lot here, but they're not easy.

That's a fair point. With borers, the leaves suddenly wilt before they start to change color. But as I said on the other thread two days ago, it's probably a watering issue.
