Don’t center a large object above. If you put a large object above, center it over the fireplace opening and try to pick an object that is smaller than the fireplace opening.

Don’t try to make the design symmetrical. It just needs to be balanced. You can do that with vases, candles, lanterns, flowers, sculpture, mirrors, wall art, pillows, anything. Find objects that are large, medium and small, and arrange them asymmetrically. Don’t put exactly the same item on the left and right. Try a large and small item on the left, and a medium item on the right. They can connect to each other through line, shape, color, pattern or texture.

Looks at decor pics on websites like potterybarn.com and crateandbarrel.com. They rarely arrange decor items symmetrically.

From an amateur point of view, the two planters on the hearth draw attention to the asymmetry- maybe fill the area to the left of the firebox a firewood holder of comparable height to the firebox?

That's a fabulous fireplace. I'd try a large-ish piece of art, no bigger than the fireplace opening, centered over the fireplace opening. The circular mirror might be okay but it doesn't do much, in my opinion. Two pieces of smaller artwork on the left, stacked one over the other. Possibly a couple of candles or something on the mantle. Something you might need to play around with. As suggested above, move both planters to the left of the fireplace opening.

IMO the mirror no matter what style is reflecting nothing worth seeing twice so I would do a piece of art over the firebox side and maybe a fab vase on the other side or nothing at all there BTW if those are fake plants they belong in the garbage real or nothing

I actually like doing something above your fireplace so that it's more of a focal point.

I'd like to paint it a darker color. black, a dark bronze, something. Maybe one of these darker colors

Then I'd bring in furniture that looks something like this:

I'd also do a hide rug, maybe layer it over a jute or sisal.

you could also do the wood mantle and do a bunch of plants. (no candles)

if you must keep it, consider painting it a matte black. easy to do

what's on the sides of the fireplace? do you have room to do any built-ins or something?

I agree with @Fori , only one plant or two together. I love your fireplace. Please do not ever paint that stone. It's classic and the colors are great as they are.

I’d move the round mirror to the left a bit, then do a layered look, similar to Beth’s first picture.

I’d get rid of both faux plants and find retro fireplace tools, cool baskets, candles, pottery, lower plants, or something else not so large for the hearth.

Remove the horrible doors, use a screen or leave it open.

I think the doors match the style well.
