Do you plan to grow it on the porch? In a container? Any direct sunlight?

IMO, Orange Flame gets better fall color than Seiryu but both need a reasonable amount of sunlight for that to happen.

Gardengal, I plan to grow it in a container on the north end of the east facing porch. The only direct sunlight will be morning sunlight.

I am wondering if that is enough. I was planning on pairing it with a autumn moon white camellia.

I'm not sure that is enough for either the tree to color up well or for the camellia to bloom well. Half day sun (4-5 hrs. ) is probably a minimum.

I have two 10 gallon containers ready for plants in that location. I am not particularly attached to these two plants. I was thinking of planting an evergreen and a deciduous shrub/tree. The evergreen need not have flowers but I am trying to avoid anything with poisonous leaves/berries or sharp leaves/thorns. It’s been hard to find candidates 😅

For a north facing porch with a small amount of sunlight, I'd opt for dwarf sweet box, Sarcococca humilis. A compact and very tidy looking evergreen shrub with incredibly fragrant, tiny white flowers in winter. One of my favorite shrubs for shade. It does produce berries but not heavily and they are not known to be toxic (although I wouldn't recommend eating).

And I'd probably pick another evergreen for the second container and very likely something with some colored or variegated foliage, perhaps Pieris 'Little Heath' or Euonymus 'Emerald Gaiety' or 'Butterscotch'.

Thank you gardengal for the wonderful suggestions.. I was hoping for one container yo have a bit of height - like 3 to 4 feet. Any thoughts on that?

Sarcococca = 24 inches

Pieris Little Heath = 2.5 to 3 feet

Euonymus could all grow to that size eventually. Green Spire euonymus will grow taller, 4-6' , but just a boring solid green.

6-8' or more in the ground, although I have never seen one that tall.
