What do you mean by updated. I am getting no hint as to your style other than a skinny console table. You need to provide some info.

Change the light fixture. Something not so ornate/ fussy. Easier to clean.

Moulding around the windows up top to match the moulding around the interior doors.. Artwork. Maybe paint the bit of wall around the high window the same color as the ceiling? Not sure on this but I don't like that small amount of high contrast paint color up there. Maybe no need to after moulding is installed...

I’d like a more modern aesthetic but not tied anything so transitional. The ornate chandelier is definitely being replaced. I thought either a wheel chandelier or a very large pendant. I like statement pieces and deciding on an accent color.

It's difficult for me to suggest a different color for the foyer without knowing what the rest of the house looks like. The foyer is the introduction to your house. While plenty of people use a neutral color in their foyer, if you like something more dramatic your space could make more of a statement. But nothing exists in a vacuum. If you use a non-neutral color it should be a color that is also used elsewhere on the first floor. Otherwise it's just a head-scratcher. The color of your floors is warm, so keep that in mind. So what colors are used elsewhere? What colors do you like? Do you want a different neutral instead? If so, I can suggest BM Edgecomb Gray or SW Accessible Beige. Those are greiges which would warm up the space a little and go with black and white.

Well IMO a wheel light fixture is not modern at all. I think the fact that the window shows the light at night is awesome so look for something that will be a star at night so mayeb something that hangs downto make sure it is in the window. Make sure the light you choose lights the entry not the ceiling too.

I think the chandelier is pretty and graceful, but if you don't like it, by all means change it.

A warm white on the walls would brighten the room up, IMO, and a large mirror above the table, and a plant or 3 would be nice as well.

Those do seem to be popular right now. IMO, not as graceful tho.

FWIW, I'm not sure I understand the many shadeless pendant lights that are everywhere these days - don't they make things kind of glare-y at night?

Good point! I’ve had the same thoughts and the pendant lights are a bit overplayed. I believe the current chandelier is the original from 2002. I want an update to make the place our own but not sure what to do.

kandrewspa The entire main floor is painted in grays and in bad shape. It is a little drab and needs to be brightened up. Im not sure why the trim is yellowing in a lot of spots.

I think current light is good companion to bannister rails on stairs. What do the dining& kitchen lights look like? Are you planning an area rug in entry? Do you have art for above console already?

KW I don’t have anything that would work for the walls and planning to hang a large arched mirror above the console. Our last home was a modern place in the city and I might be able to incorporate some things later on. All the lighting matches throughout the main floor and it’s just more ornate than I’d like.

I would add trim around the window above the door, but not the dormer window. Color on the walls up to the existing horizontal trim piece, but paint the dormer area (around window and the walls both sides, down to the horizontal trim piece, the ceiling color. This will prevent the current "cut off" look it has now. I would also want to add dividers on the sidelights. Are you leaving the roll up shades? I would remove since you are painting.

Another idea would be to paint the horizontal trim piece (and everything above it) the wall color, so that the trim piece doesn't break up the wall. This is doable since there is no trim next to it on either wall, so it will fade visually.

Not sure if the console table comes off like this in person, but it appears to be too long and intrudes in the space near the stairs. Not saying it's in the way, just visually it looks too long. Can you take a photo of the console table wall from the office entrance? I would like to see an oversized framed painting on canvas on this wall. Also a nice rug.

The wheel chandeliers have been everywhere for awhile now, along with the open lanterns. I am not fond of the double lanterns either. What does the rest of your house look like? Do you like vintage style lighting, antiques or modern lighting?

There will be a big contrast between white trim and black doors. As someone said above, look at warm colors with your wamr floor. You can select a dark warm color instead of a true black. Even though you don't like the current color palette, your photos give off an inviting welcome to our home vibe. I'd bet you want that warm feeling with the new palette.

Wow - a very mixed bag of lighting! If you’re planning to replace all of them, I would approach it as a single project & pick them all out before buying any of them individually. They don’t need to match in design but I think should be compatible with each other & flow - like colors from room to room.

Allison0704 Thank you! I’ll take all your suggestions into account. I didn’t even thino ablut the cut off line below the dormer window and not sure what you mean by dividers on the sode windows? I actially like roller shades but not sold on the current deaign. The console is 81 inches long but I really like the design and narrow depth of it. I added a few pictures for better perspective. The walls are in bad shape but the colors aren’t terrible. I’m just tired of gray and the only other colors I like are shades of white. Since the kitchen cabinets look like White Dove, I don’t think another white would work on the walls unless I have it matched—not sure if that always works. Thank you!

Agree with finding all the light fixtures before purchasing so that the house flows (different than matching).

Beth H. Wow, thank you for all of the ideas! I love all of the boards you put together but especially the one with the jute rug and cubes under the console. I agree about the door. Actually, all of the doors are cheap and need to be changed out at some point, but that door would be a great starting point. The grays look great with the flooring and I don't think it can be avoided considering the color of our kitchen cabinets. Thanks again, this gives me better vision.:)
