It’s stressful to pay all that money and find unexpected results. One of ours ended up with too thick mud… luckily it blends in ok. The others were either great or had the metal edge( which can also be white). I’ll include a picture. We just wanted it all to be over, but should have addressed it. Hang in there.

Yes it is a shower. The shower floor was hot mopped.

He said he concrete mudded the walls. WHat is spot bonded?

Where the whole tile doesn't have thinset on it but just spots of thinset.

Is that redguard on the wall? If so, why isn't it on the whole wall?

Yes it is redguard. It is only on the niche and on the top it's suppose to be a steam shower.

Steam shower is a completely different process than a regular shower. It required membranes and not regular cement board and Redguard, It needs to be vapor proof in addition to waterproof. Also tile in a shower required 95% coverage with the thinset (backbuttered) and yours appears to be spot bonded which is a definite no in a shower and a complete hell no in a steam shower. Those tiles will be popping in short order.

I am going to have him stop. It will now cost us double to make it right. Demo and rebuild. Plus gave him 3k already. Tile wasted. What a hot mess. What do you mean by membranes?

Whoa so many things wrong here . Steam showers are a real PITA to get right when a reno and this is none of those things. Spot bonded tile is never right and as mentioned for sure not in a steam shower or any other shower . IMO the best steam showers are the prefab ones I use them often in renovations no issues with all the things needed to make sure it functions and stands up for years.

After reading about tile jobs on Houzz, I feel like no one installs shower tiles properly. We just always assume they are the professionals and know what they are doing. I’m so jaded now, but better prepared! I really appreciate the insight and time everyone on here shares. Sorry you have the extra bills and hassles, Marta.

@Marta Here is one method from Schluter Kerdi, but Steamers require much more than Redguard Waterproofing as I mentioned above much more than waterproof, it needs to be vapor proof. All wall and ceilings. This is all part of the reason the the average steamer is more than double a traditional shower. Whole different skill set before you even get to the tile.

There is nothing done correctly for that to be a steam shower. A steam shower is a 30K luxury project, with super certified and licensed high skills labor. Those are not luxury materials, or labor. That is a direct invitation to moisture damage into your home.

What should be done? The plumbing and electrical is done already. The tile guy is licensed but apparently it is over his head.
