I think the same dark stairs and add the runner

I would probably carpet the basement stairs fully. It will take a lot of work to make them look anywhere close to the upper stairs and it will be easier to clean them without having a slot of exposed flooring running down each side.

I have the same stairs and did my basement stairs the same. Love it. My babies are in college now but I do have dogs. We used stair carpet treads instead of a runner on both and love it. Works great for slipperiness. Example…..
