skylight placement

Need some advice on placement of skylights for our vaulted ceilings (this is part of a gut reno where we are already putting in a new vaulted gable). We need more sunlight in the kitchen space so our architect recommend skylights. He has them between the tresses so spacing is important.

However, I feel like the left two skylights might look awkward with the island pendant lights and dining table chandelier because the skylights are off-center. Would it look ok? Is there a better spot? I could just do 1 or 2 and not all 3. Any advice?

Do you have any pics of the house, interior and exterior? Tough to tell from the floor plan as many details are missing.

I too need a lot more context for sure where the kitchen is located in the house . IMO kitchens in the center of homes is always bad design and hopefully the kitchen was designed by KD not your architect. Please post a to scle floor plan and some pics too. I also would like to know the reason for the vault since usually thet create lots of issues with sound, and heating and cooling for no real purpose.

Here’s the floorplan. It’s a total gut reno and we are bringing down interior walls to open up the space. Vaulting ceilings because ceilings are very low and house already needs a new roof. Live in SF and never need to use AC and rarely heat. Yes we have a KD that worked with our architect so we are very happy with the floorplan, just need advice on skylight placement.

    House faces N/S.

Here’s the existing kitchen and dining area. While the kitchen and dining areas will be in the same spot, the walls coming down and repositioning will make it look totally different. The fridge wall won’t be there anymore, the island will be much larger and positioned the other way, the ceilings will be vaulted. The sink window and corner door will stay.

Hi. Have you lived with sky lights before? Do you live where it rains a lot? I have heard people complaining of how annoyingly loud it is when it rains. Your rooms already seem bright and cheery.

We had a large skylight in the kitchen of our previous house in Los Angeles. It was approximately 4ft x 4ft and over the island. It worked great. I did not have pendants over the island.

I think you should skip the skylight in the dining area and only do the 2 in the kitchen. I would skip the pendants and make your range, hood and backsplash the focal point. Spend the money on an amazing chandelier over the dining table. Polls on the forums about pendants vs no pendants, usually end up with 50/50 results!

We have owned 3 homes with skylights over the last 23 years and never had any problems with them and enjoyed the natural light they brought into the home.

Interesting! I always assume island pendant were norm, never considered not having one! I like your suggestion.

The architect suggested we could also just do 2 and move the middle skylight to in-between the island and dining table, that way we could still do the pendant lights but we wouldn’t have a skylight directly above the island. What do you think of that idea?

Hard to say without being in the space, but from the plans, I would just keep the 2 in the kitchen. I think it will look cleaner not to have a "hole" in the dining room ceiling.

    I agree with your architect.
