Is it worth fixing the Honda HR214?

Hello,I have a Honda HR214 lawn mower that was purchased in the early 80s. The self propel no longer works on it. I brought it into a Honda Service center and they are stating that the transmission needs to be replaced, among other issues. The total cost for the repair and tune up would be $700.00. I see a new Honda HRN216VLA is going for $619. So, is it worth repairing the HR214? I heard they don't make the new ones like this model anymore, so not sure what to do.

Personally it's not worth the expense and you should by a new mower. With that said I searched for the complete transmission assembly and it is no longer available, so I don't know where they're getting a complete transmission. Most of the individual parts inside the transmission are still available, so are they rebuilding the transmission and the reason it's so expensive? Maybe the did something simple to fix it and quoted you a new transmission just to get you to buy a new mower, it happens more than you think so beware.

Buy a new mower and then browse the internet for someone selling a used complete transmission like ebay and at your leisure replace the assembly yourself. It's not that hard if you are handy.

What you do depends on how much spare time you have, and are you mechanically inclined. If you are tear the transmission apart, and you may find there is something simple that can be fixed or replaced. Then you can use the tractor for many years to come. If you can find nothing it will be easier to put the parts in the trash bin.

On the other hand many stores are having sales on their tractors. Also some manufacturer are getting ready to change to change their lines, and giving deep mark downs on the old units.

The local authorized JD deal had the part, so it was just a matter of picking them up. The the old tractor probably could have been repair if I spent the time and money. All Things consider, I replaced it.

Two years ago I got a great deal on my new John Deere when the local Lowes has a great sale. My 20 year old JD was reaching the point where there were many little things wearing out. The 20 year old tires were the biggest thing that was going to need replacing.

So if your yard can wait while you work on it try to fix it. If not look for a good sale on a new tractor

New mowers are complete POS compared to older mowers. I typically expect to get a new mower every 4 or so years. They break. I don't have the time or patience to figure it out. And in the mean time, the lawn needs mowing. So, I put in a request for recycling pickup and go to HD and buy whatever is on sale. Never spend too much because whatever I get will break in a few years. I'm an ideal consumer for lawn mower companies.
